Sweetest Lovebird

Years ago I went to the bird store to get a male cockatiel. As I was looking I happened to look in this open pen and there was this little lovebird jumping trying to get my attention so I put my hand in and he jumped right on it and climbed up my arm to my shoulder. He stayed there the whole time while I looked for a male cockatiel. I finally found him and I tried to put the lovebird back and he would not go back. So I asked the guy how much he was and thankfully I had enough to get both birds, because I definitely did not have the heart to put him back. Anyway, they placed him in the usual bird box and as soon as I got in the car I placed him on my shoulder and he stayed there the whole car ride home. The tiel seemed to be just fine in the box though. Anyway, I immediately bonded with my new lovebird, Kewpie. He loves to be with me and he is just the sweetest lovebird. I have other lovebirds since they were hatched from the egg and none have the temperament he has. Kewpie is definitely one of a kind. I got lucky when he chose me in the bird store that day

What a sweet and heart warming story. I'm so glad you shared that because lovebirds some times get a bad rap about being aggressive and changing behaviors over time. I'm glad that yours is still as sweet as can be

Awwwwwwwwwwwww :)

That's the best bird story. Kewpie sounds like an absolute dear.

Best of luck with him and your other feathered friends!

Lovies do get a bad rap! I used to have a Lutino Lovie and she was adorable... absolutely loved being out and bossing everyone around. She would beg for scritches and would sit there forever while I scratched her neck! If I stopped, she would stretch out her neck and fuss until I continued.

That being said, she also loved to chase my pug around the room... he was terrified oh her! Her favorite game was to corner him and make him sit in the corner! I would always have to rescue my poor little doggie from her!

I miss her!

Lovebirds aren't for everyone. There is a lot of personality in those little bodies. They don't know that they are only 5 inches long and are fearless. Though they don't speak (some people claim to have talking lovies, but the speech isn't like that of a bigger parrot) but can chatter and banter with the best of them.
We share our home with a large flock of lovies. I wouldn't have it any other way....they are a joy!

That's a great story!! I think lovies are just beautiful, but they aren't a bird for us. I get my fill just looking at everyone's pictures!

chosen

I had the same thing happen to me!! I was with my daughter shopping for another tiel. They only had one and they had it on a perch with the baby lovebirds in the bottom of the open pen. While we were looking at the tiel, two of the lovebirds kept jumping on me. I'd put them back and they would jump back on. I kept putting them back and would move around to the other side, but they just followed. There were several other people around this pen but they kept choosing me. Needless to say, I came home with 3 birds last week. I have never had lovebirds before. They are beautiful. The blue one likes to have his head and neck rubbed. The green one wants it when he sees the blue one getting rubbed. My son has named them blue and green since we are unsure of the sexes at this time. They love attention! They have also become adept escape artists. I came home last night and the cage was empty!! They were hiding in my son's bedroom. As soon as I found them, they wanted cuddled and then food! This morning I checked on them before I went to work and Green was inside the cage and Blue was on top!

I have a Lovie and he nips but is a sweet bird. He will only step up to your arm if we have a long sleeve shirt on.

He makes the rounds most mornings when we feed the other birds on our shoulder. He likes to run down our arm when we are holding a food dish and take a sample before we put the dishes in the cages.

Sweet Peachy

Loved your story about Kewpie! It reminded me of our Peachy who flew to our dock one day while living aboard our sailboat in Honolulu. We tried to find the owner, ran an ad in the paper, etc. as Peachy clung to our necks kissing us. We connected instantly as well.
Our lifestyle wasn't ideal for having a pet, but we couldn't resist keeping Peachy. We did purchase a "female" for him so if we had to travel he'd have a mate to keep him company. Well, "Mango" ended up being a male, a humper, and a bit bity at times. The two are like brothers though. They seem to love each other, preen & feed each other, however do get testy from time to time.
Peachy's first choice is to be on us but has the sweetness to be Mango's friend, most of the time.
Take care of each other.........Lori
