Old Lovebird trouble seeing?

Hello, my lovebird is a dutch blue peached faced and is just a bundle of joy and even at 12 years old now is extremely active and funloving. Lately, he has been what I think is trouble seeing. He no longer flys around the house (we never clipped his wings) and will only come out of his cage if we go and get him. Infact he calls us over in the evening when he wants to come out but up until about 3 weeks ago he would just fly out when we opened the door in the evening. He even "tells" us when he wants to go back in the cage with certain chirps and actions he does that one can tell he wants to go back in the cage to eat or wind down for the night.

Ive also noticed what looks like his feathers around his beak and nose turning somewhat gray to almost a darker gray but not quite black. He's also had a small bald spot for about 2 years now around his right ear which has never seemed to cause him a problem in the past.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with something like this or similiar. Really breaks my heart that he fears to fly now although he still seems happy as can be even though his vision seems to be deteriotating rapidly.

Thanks for any advice,

Mike

Mike,

Congratulations on taking such good care of your lovebird very well that he's lived to 12 years already!

If it were my bird, I'd call my vet and see what they had to say. A checkup to see about the vision might be in order. course, you could always try a home test yourself with some millet and see if he notices it; if so, it might not be his vision that is the issue.

The feathers around his nares, are they dry or do they look dark because they are wet?

The more I think about it, a call to the vet would probably be best for the little fella.
