Need some assistance

My mom recently lost her parakeet and a week later her dad passed a way. In memory of her father she thought of buying a white parakeet. I suggested to Love birds for the past and future as she likes listening to the birds sing. Her only excuse to not buying a pair is attachment. She does not want to get attached to a bird. Is there any way I can convince her to buy a pair or should I let her go with the parakeet.

I'd encourage the budgie[parakeet]but if you interact with it and help her tame it I think she'll become attached anyway. If she does not want to interact with the bird, maybe a pair of finches would be a good idea as they would have each other for company.

I am sorry your mom is going through such a rough time (I am sure that losing your grandpa was not easy on you either). I don't know how you could have pet birds and not get attached when you are trying not to do so, but just in case, I would get her at least two (bet you can find two budgies at the local animal shelter)

heck what am I saying, you are local....there are at least four budgies on Craig's List tonight?!

I wouldn't recommend lovebirds for singing, unless she has a particular fondness for their pipping. They don't tend to sing so much as call loudly.

If she's not going to spend much time with the bird/s, a pair of budgerigars would probably be perfect. Two boys will usually live together quite happily, providing a big enough cage.

I like the idea of finches, especially if she doesn't want to bond to the birds. A budgie or lovebird requires human interaction, especially if they're single birds.

There are white zebra finches out there, if that's the color your mom really wants to get.

well, if she does not wanna get attatched to the birds, and she wants singing, why not get her some canaries? the males sing beautifully and they dont like to be handled.

I'm so sorry about your mother's recent losses... it's difficult to lose any member of the family, be they human or animal.

Let your mother take her time when considering adding a new pet into the home. Ask her what she wants in an avian companion (assuming, of course, that she does indeed want another one). If she likes to hear pretty "singing" and chirping and doesn't not want a bird to sit on her shoulder and climb about, definitely consider a pair of finches or a canary. If she is looking for a hands-on, human-interactive pet, another budgie, a cockatiel or a lovebird might be a better choice.

I've had most of my avian experience with budgies and lovebirds; I recommend both highly but will say that lovies have a distinctive vocalization. Some folks enjoy it but many folks find it grating.

Best wishes,

-e-

I would be hesitant on the finches as they live to breed! She may be getting more than she bargained for in keeping them healthy, and happy if she doesn't want them raising young. They will mate and lay eggs even without a nest. I would also suggest budgies or a male canary. The canary is the most overlooked softbill. All households should have one if they are into birds:)

Some of the most beautiful sounds come out of the Java Rice Finches. They are larger that the average finch, and live very happily in a cage without much interaction. Check them out!!
