No more then 2 to a cage
I have now found out that it was one of my lovebirds that killed and ate part of the other one the other nite. I found it eating another one today, caught in the act. I have sepatrated them to 2 to a cage after talking to someone familiar with lovebirds. You can have a dominate pair in the cage and they will kill the others. A hard lesson to learn, but one that will never be forgotten.

Re: No more then 2 to a cage
I am sorry to hear this for you, but so glad you shared the information. I rehomed three lovies. Two that were together and one that was seperate from the first pair. In my reading about the lovebirds, I summarized that allowing the new bird in with the two that are paired would not be good. And it was more instinctual than knowledge, the new lovie appeared much more aggressive than the pair. So I am hand training the solo lovie and trying to give him the companionship he needs.

Re: No more then 2 to a cage
My heart goes out to you.
I lost my love birds in a tragic way too and dont think I could have another any time soon, its just to heart breaking:( I hope your holidays are better...... I have known many people who keep many in a cage but they must be even and no one sex can dominate, for example you cant have 2 males and 1 female, or 3 males and one female, or they will compete. |
