“Chirp factor” solved, for now anyway.
Well I had a post here titled
"Should I get Another Lovebird? Thoughts would be appreciated" I’m not seeing the thread anymore for some odd reason, I’m sure that it was posted here under “lovebirds” Now when I re visit the email notification of replies to me from the thread it seems to take me something completely different? I’m totally confused?? :?
Well anyway the subject was basically wondering if perhaps another bird would help to calm Houdini down and stop chirping so much and irritating my husband. Well the other day it occurred to me that Houdini needed a major routine change and I had to get control of this flock! I don’t know why anyone else didnt suggested this?
Before Houdini’s cage was set on top of the computer area on a shelf above me that over time she had taken over and made the entire place her territory. I believe the main cause for the constant chirping was a mixture between sexually maturing and becoming territorial over her cage and area surrounding it. The signs were biting and aggressive behavior toward me while in this “zone” allot of shredding of paper and placing into her tail. Burrowing into anything she could find and again the constant chirping at us all day.
So I finally decided that she needed a major routine change. I took an older cage out of the attic and switched cages placing her new cage a stool at the other side of the room and set lower then me while standing. I gave her the old happy hut she used but changed some of the toys in her cage and making a small play area outside her cage on top of it, away from the computer area. I also clipped her wings down so that she couldn’t freely fly where she wanted and in turn “lost control” over her dominance and territory. The computer area now has things on it un-bird related and we have not been allowing her to go up there.
Since doing all this I must say that Houdini is like a changed bird, well more like when she was younger before her head changed color. She’s been much, much more quiet and is spending more time with me now, preening my hair and nibbling my ear and such. She’s interested in her cage toys a bit more now and inst trying to destroy everything so much.
I don’t know how long this will last, I expect when she gets use to her new cage and area it will all come back lol, but this has worked great for now. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before; I think maybe I just took on the leader roll of our little flock. So for anyone with a chirpy mean bird, you might wanna try this.
