Hello Norm,
Welcome to BB this is a wonderful place to get answers for question that you might have. And remember the only dumb question is the question that is never asked. As for how long you should wait that depends on if you're going to hand feed them. Now I'm not saying that you should I'm just asking as to if you're going to. If you're going to hand feed them then you should wait a few weeks. Now if you have never raised nor hand fed then this is not something that I would do. Parent raised birds can and often times are tamer than hand raised birds. But then it will take a lot of time. You will need to socialize them. This being said you'll need to start taking them out and handling them for a few minutes everyday. If the mother will not allow you to take the chicks then this can make more work in the long run. Most birds will allow you to remove one chick at a time so that you can socialize with the bird. We have never had any of our hens kill the chick when we have returned it to the nesting box. Most of our hens will allow us to remove the chicks because they do not see us as a threat to them. (Remember we are the big things that bring them food and fresh water) Most of our birds will act as though they are going to bite but if we do get bit then we know that we have to distract the pair so that we can remove a chick. Now as for hand feeding if this is something that you're going to do PLEASE do a lot of research on this subject. It is not an easy task. You will need to get a lot of things before you can start. ie: Brooder Something to feed the chick with (syringe, pypit) An alarm clock (most chick require feedings EVERY 3-4 hours) Formula With us we have chosen to hand feed most of the chicks that we raise only because we do not have to time required to socialize them if they were parent raised. Hand feeding takes a lot of our time but it is well worth it when we have super sweet babies that we sell to the public. Once again welcome to BB and hope to see pictures of those chicks. |
