I haven't been to the lovebirds.co.nz website for quite some time... been to the forum plenty of times, though haven't checked out the website part of it since the site had crashed and was set back up about 5 days later...

Hi there Blackangel! Have you had lovebirds before? Do you intend on breeding them or just having them as extra personalities in your home? Just curious.
I only have one lovebird (my only bird for that matter) so he's VERY much bonded to humans. I'll take him to the local pet shop here in town and he loves to chirp at the other lovebirds but he's definetely bonded to humans. If you have a pair of lovebirds they'll bond to each other more than you. With time and training though I'm sure they'll socialize to humans more often though. Keep us posted as to how your training goes with those little guys! Cheers! |

Peachy has a black cloud over her these days! She was a Christmas gift, a wanted one. I have done all the things I was told to do, but she still freaks out when I get her from her cage. When she sees me coming she starts breathing very hard and this has been going on since I brought her home. The only thing she has stopped is biting. I took her to the Vet and had her wings clipped, she has plenty of toys and they are changed. She like to go out on the porch and talk to the wild birds, in her cage, but goes spastic when I want to hold her. After I have her in my hands she seems to calm down, but is ready to go if I give her a little room. She likes for me to scratch her cheeks and lets me kiss her, but would rather be in her cage. I have thought about the flight suit? I hate to see her so scared when I go and get her. This can't be good for her. I have tried the stepup and everything else. HELP!

Please check out this site...
http://www.landofvos.com/faqs/faqs4.html#faq5 It may be able to get your lovebird more comfortable with you, though you need to try to spend 15 minutes or more with your lovebird everday, for 5-15 minutes each time, in 3-5 sessions. Talk to her calmly, offer her food (a treat or something that you would eat that is safe for her), or try playing with her and a toy. By this I mean have her out near you, and play with a toy. Get excited about this toy as if you were having pure fun, but don't quite offer to let her play with this 'special' toy untill she becomes VERY interested. Just a thought, though not all birds become friendly towards humans, it is really worth it to give it a shot!

I have tried the toy and she does play with it, plus everytime I return her to her cage I give her a favorite, Millet Sprays. She loves this. I get a kick out of her, on the porch, she goes spastic. The room (porch) is large and enclosed with sliding glass doors and on the days that are just warming is when she gets out. I will try and the 3-5 sessions. The only reason I haven't is because she gets so scared, ie. her breathing, just like we do when we are scared. I can't stand to see her like this, but I will persevere. She is worth it! Thanks, Sunnie

Try having a treat in your hand, and don't give her any treats while she is in the cage. Have her come to YOU for the treat as this might be a good way to try to win her trust over. Good luck!
