I need advice on seperating my birds!

This morning we got Spike and Ducky out, and usually my husband prefers Ducky while I hold Spike. Well, he kept telling me that his nails were really short on one side and that it was making it hard to hold on. I was confused because he got his nails trimmed at the vet and I had never noticed a difference between the length of the nails on either foot. After he said this a few times I decided to look for myself and I realized that it wasn't his nails that were short. He's missing chunks from at least 2 toes. I could see one of the back ones still had some nail, but he kept his foot curled up and won't use it to hold on so it was really hard to see closely. But the long front toe was definitely missing a big section. He's messing with it and so is Spike so the vet told me I should seperate them asap. So I went and bought a cage. They are really upset and they are trying to get to eachother. I have the cages next to eachother right now so they can see and hear eachother, but I wanted to stress them out as little as possible so I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on the right way to seperate them.

Oh and don't worry, we are heading to the vet today for the earliest appointment they had.

Please help guys. Now Spike is hurt although I can't tell where. He had blood on his face and I think he hurt himself trying to break out and find Ducky. The vet said I need to keep them separated until his foot is healed though. :(

if he is stressing out being separated and in the same room, then i would suggest putting them in separate rooms. Try keeping him calm, offer his favorites, and play with him. I would think eventually he will calm down.
