I think it's perfectly normal.
I used to have a budgie, Oscar, who hated little toy soldiers and these little green ghosts we used to have in a board game (LONG, LONG AGO!). Whenever he's see them on the top of his cage or on the window sill, he'd start to furiously chat to himself and be on a mission to go knock the heck out of those toys. He'd smash them on the cage and throw them down to the floor. Then Look down in triumph ( or in confusion as to why they were no longer a threat..not sure.) Anyhow, it was fun to watch and he didn't seem any worse for wear. I guess if you want to make it more special, you can bring the toy out on special occasions, only...sort of like "return of the enemy".

This is completely normal. Lovebirds are generally intense little birds, and often choose one toy or two toys to use as a "rival" or enemy" to relieve excess aggression or territorial feelings on, or just excess energy. It seems like every lovebird needs one of these- even my little female, who is the least aggressive lovebird I ave ever met, has a "rival" toy she enjoys bashing around. I've actually heard of people helping to reduce their lovebirds territorial agression by redirecting them to beating up their "rival toy" instead of biting fingers!

my bird does this too to his bell toy. He flips out and squawks and sqeaks and beats up his bell until he is tuckered out. Then he cozies up next to it and takes a nap, wakes up and does it all over again..lol.
