Pregnant?

Hi guys, i saw my birds mating yesterday, and my perhaps female bird let it happen, she didn't stop as she usually does, now I've put a like, log in the cage for them to hollow out, I can't see any earnest hollowing, but they stripping bits of wood off it and twirling it in their mouths, and fighting over it, then dropping it. And also, they have most definitely been acting strange, how? Im not sure. But the just seem so different... And i would like to take them to the vet, but they aren't hand tamed yet, so it would be traumatic for them, please help! Do you know any signs of pregnancy?

Hello, sorry about the wait - it spring and most of us have ventured outside. Lol, your little lovebirds know its spring as well. First off, Birds do not get "pregnant so to speak" Birds produce one egg at a time approximatly every other day. It taes about 24 hours from start to finish and this can happen weather a male is preasent or not. If there is a male he can fertilize each egg as it is passing thru (nutshell bird sex ed here, lol) just because you witness mating does not mean the egg will be fertile or there is even an egg at all. The first clutch of lovebirds can be nothing or everything. If you are planning to raise babies I suggest you do alllot of research on parrot breeding and outfit your kids with a proper nest box built just for a lovebirds needs. You can find Tons of info online or pm me with questions individually so i can answer them for you in detail. Breeding lovebirds is a huge resposibilty both in time and ethically. There are so many babies in shelters around the US looking for loving homes right now. Then there is the choice of handfeeding or not (handfed lovies do make better pets and find homes faster) but this requires a TON of commitment on your part. if you work full time its nearly impossible. Your hollow log is foreign to them - they need a nest box just the right size and some nesting material. If you dont want babies then we can go another route just let me know and there are plenty of expirienced breeders on here to help you out.

thankyou very much for this info! But, if we do get chicks, we probably won't sell them!

Awsome - then you will need to decide how many babies you can keep in your lifetime (lovies breed like rabbits) and how to keep the parents from breeding when your done. So now you need a nest box and some learning!
