DNA sexing

Hi All!
I'm new to the forums and lovebirds as well! I'm getting my new lovebird in about two weeks once he/she has been weaned. I'm so excited! I've already got my cage and am starting to set up my lovies new 'area.'

There is one lovie I have my eye on in this clutch (there are four in total) but I would like to find out what the sex is before I bring her/him home. Should I DNA test with an online test? I've heard these are effective and inexpensive. Or should I go to my vet and ask them to do it for me, if that is even possible?

I've also heard that you should get your birds tested for certain viruses/diseases. Is this done in the same way as DNA sexing? Or can I just take my lovie to the vet and they can tell me everything I need to know? Thanks for the help!!

It is much less expensive to use the home DNA test than to have a vet do it. I would see if the breeder would be willing to do it.

I've talked to the breeder and she said she would be willing to do it but I have to order the kits online. I've heard many people recommend Avian Biotech, but I am located in Canada and on their website it says any orders outside of the US must be sent to their office in the UK. I'm guessing this means more expensive postage and longer wait time for me. Does anyone know a reputable Canadian company that can do DNA sexing?

I use Avian Biotech all the time. many many birds. Acccurate, easy, cheap.
Avian Services Center: DNA sexing and disease testing for all species of birds.
I do blood from a nail - it IS less painful than feathers. I know this from many expiriences with my birds and birds done for others. I HATE pulling feathers. JMO
