Lovebird and Severe Macaw

Hi, I am thinking of getting a rescued bird- severe macaw. I have had a lovebird for five years now and just thinking what kind of problem I can have if macaw comes home. Anyone has experience? Thank you very much

I would suggest that you do a 30 day quarantine. After that you can put the cages near each other but I would never let the birds interact. The severe is far too big and could do serious damage to your lovebird. Other than that I do not see any other problems.

Severes (in my opinion) have the personalities of grouchy old men...lol...or at least mine does. My severe is a DNA'd male of approx 30 - 50 yrs old. He loves me and no one else....I adore him! He will growl at me at times, but mostly I have a wonderful relationship with him.

Also be aware that the severe can kill your lovebird in about 2 seconds---so they shouldn't be allowed to be "up close and personal" with one another.

If you adopt a severe, make sure you are aware---an adopted bird (if from a bad past life) may take months to "warm up" if ever. If you are looking at giving a bird a great home, proper veterinary care, a good cage with plenty of toys---and won't be too upset if he doesn't warm up to be a cuddly bird...then I say go for it! Adopting is a VERY rewarding experience and I highly recommend it.

Thank you very much for your advice, I can't risk my lovebird. It is so hard for me to say no. My lovebird is flying free in the house and only sleeps in his cage- I think I would not forgive myself is accident happened with my lovebird. That macaw warmed up and let me take him and play with him. I got attached to him. Thanks
