Keeping different types of lovebirds together?

I have heard while researching lovebirds that you shouldnt keep diferent types of lovebirds together. For example the peach faced is meant to be more aggressive than the back masked lovebirds ( so i have heard)

If, for example i ever wanted to a friend for Antari (blackmasked) what other types of lovebirds could he be put with, and what types would not be recommended? i know obviously some birds of the same types will never bond or get along, but i am more just curious, and i am definitly not looking for a friend for Antari just yet! He is a big enough handful for us at the moment!

The various species of lovebirds do not share a common range in their native Africa. While they are all part of the same genus, the various lovebird species available as pets are different: the look different, they have different nesting behaviors, different calls, etc.

I had always been cautioned about housing a peach-faced lovie with another species, like the masked or Fischer's. That's not to say that lovebirds of different species can never get along. There are people who have had success with that. I think that as with ANY species of parrot, you have to take things VERY slow. After quarantine, let them socialize at a distance, supervise them closely when they are finally allowed out at the same time, etc.

Keep in mind that lovebirds have a reputation for being extremely cage territorial so if you really want to keep a peachie with a masked (just offering an example), I would think that you'd need a third, neutral cage for them to eventually live in.

I have a black masked fishers male and peach faced hen. They are completely in love and inseperable! They have had five clutches of chicks together. The babies are sterile. It just depends on the bird I guess.

I'd say the younger you introduce them the better! Good luck!

It can be done but caution should be taken. Also just something to note. Black masked and fischers are two seperate species of lovebird.

I have had a peach-faced and black-masked together for about 3 years, now. They get along just fine. They do, however, have their moments - especially when I'm giving attention to one of them and not the other. Jealousy kicks in real quickly. As "expressmailtome" stated in his post about housing two species together: "It can be done but caution should be taken."

As I also did with mine, I would strongly recommend making this a slow transition into the same cage, with some caution. My two lovies are really good pals! :-)
