Questions about lovebirds

Hi I'm new and I'm from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I would really like to get lovebirds but i have a few questions.

1. I have been looking around at aviaries and cages on the net but can't seem to find anything that my parents and I both like. I've looked at Suncatcher aviaries and i was wondering if anyone here has bought from them? I really like the look of the Suncatcher 10.5 X 12 Ft. Flight Bird Aviary. It's massive and costs way to much but I was thinking of building something like it. My question is what about the 1/2 in. x 4 in. wire, is that OK for lovebirds. I just want to know this because if I decide (which I probably won't) to buy it I want it to be OK for my birds.

2. I was wondering if rice crackers made by the company Sun Rice are OK to feed to your bird?

3. I want to buy a male and a female lovie but I'm afraid that they will breed and I don't want them to do that cause these will be my first birds and I don't think I will be ready for babies just yet. What should I do, I want them to be a pair and live together but no breeding?

Well thats it but I want to say how happy i am to have found this forum!!!!

Evcilhayatlar, what the heck is going on with your budgies heads??? Can they see? That looks very odd and not at all normal (unless Im missing something here). I hope it isn't because they are being sat on or crushed by something.

To the OP, I had two lovebirds (they both passed in April) and they were both male. I too did not want to breed and two males get along much better than two females (nesting behavior and fighting, not a good pair). That being said, in order to ensure I had two males I had to do DNA testing. That cost me $85 (at my vet) per bird. I did this to make sure that I wasn't housing a breeding pair and also, you can not visually sex a lovebird 100% without DNA sexing. Some people will say that they are very good at guessing and have been right, but even then its 50/50 and without DNA sexing you will never know for sure, regardless what someone may tell you. Good luck finding your lovebirds, they are wonderful companions. Do be aware though that if you buy two and want them to be a pair, they will not be as bonded to you. Before I got my second lovebird I made sure that Gus, the first, and I were bonded and comfortable with one another. I didn't get a second for I think about 3 months? Once Oslo was home him and Gus bonded instantly but Gus and I still had our bond which was nice. Over time as Gus and Oslo became closer I let them become close - they were too cute!!

LovelySydney, that's a type of mutation in budgies. I don't really know much about it, but I've seen pictures.

Have you considered two male lovies? I had a female and two males who lived together very happily. She was an older bird who had been beaten down by other birds. She was non-aggressive and didn't lay eggs which I've been told is rare for a female.
