What is the clicking noise a lovebird makes?

My Lovebird had been around one Lovebird (in the cage with it) but I got a new one and it started doing this fast clicking noise around it. It likes the new one and is possessive of it. It used to be a couple with the former one or so I thought. I don't know what sexes they all are. What is the fast clicking noise a lovebird makes?

It can be a mating call between the two birds or just a sound of endearment. It could also be a warning sound to the other bird (i.e. being territorial). Could be a number of things, probably just lovebird conversation!! Observe their behavior, that should give you an idea of what is going on.

A clicking noise is part of the mating ritual. If he hasn't started yet, soon you'll see him scratching his neck, twirling in a circle, and sticking his toe in his nostril. Quite funny! LOL

Yes, I have seen what I thought was a she- making the clicking noise, going in the circle, scratching, and doing the regerjitation thing with it's neck. It was a couple with another bird but then when I got this new one- all this stuff started and it's very possesssive over the new bird and no longer with the other bird that it used to be with. It will fight the old bird for the new one. I've never seen it act like it's acting before and it is funny.

It's funny, I have a pair of female lovebirds and the older one started clicking at me like that before she laid her first egg.

From what I've the males tend to do this for females, but my girl would start clicking and scratching her head whenever she came near me (she totally ignores her cage mate who is enamored with her!)... only once did she do the typical female dance for me with spread wings. I found this particularly odd because she is parent-raised and wasn't tame at the time.

And I dunno if I would keep all three of them together if they're fighting over the new bird - things can get nasty. Might be better to separate the 'third wheel', lol.
