Question Question about Love Birds???

To start - I have an M2...and no absolutely nothing about small birds.

A friend has a love bird and doesn't feel that she is giving it enough attention and she wants me to adopt him...

The problem is - I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about love birds!

So if I decided to adopt him...what do I need to know (loaded question, I know) to keep him happy and as "well adjusted" as possible?

Thanks,

For the most part, if you can keep your M2 happy and well adjusted, you can keep a lovebird happy and well adjusted. Lovebirds are known for having big parrot personalities in little bodies. The same guidelines for keeping any bird happy work for a lovebird: a suitable cage (24in X 24in at a minimum), a variety of perches (texture and diameter), several toys (plus some back ups so you can rotate the toys occasionally), a quality pellet and seed diet IN ADDITION TO fresh veggies and fruits, and out of cage time with some one on one attention from you.

If you get him, please do not let the 2 birds out together. One nip from your M2 could mean lights out for the lovie.

Good luck, and I hope you can help give this little guy a better home! Good for your friend for realizing she isn't giving him the best life he deserves.

Thanks. I didn't think that he could be anymore difficult than an M2.

So basically I would do the same for him that I do for my M2 but on a smaller scale (smaller toys, smaller perches, etc) and he should be good to go.

I will probably adopt him. She just asked me last night (he is actually her daughters bird) and I wanted to think about it and get some info.

Thanks for the info and keep it coming.

PS: I would never let the 2 of them out at the same time. It would devastate me if something were to happen.

One thing to note is that females can be very territorial.

Lovebirds are WONDERFUL!!! I have 2 very tame sweeties (one of each gender).

They are extremely curious and want to know what you have all the time. He will probably be pretty curious about your other birds' cage, so when he's out, you'll want to watch him so he doesn't land on the larger cage and get chomped.

Lovebirds are very quick and full of energy, so a little wing clip might be a good idea until the two of you get to know each other.

Congrats, and remember to quarantine!

Ok...I've decided to take him/her (I don't even know) . SOOOOO keep the advice coming.

I know that he (just for ease) needs a bigger cage (24 X 24). But does anyone have any recommendations on one? I have been looking and there are hundreds! He is OK in the cage he is in for the moment...but I will have to upgrade to a larger one. So I am looking now trying to find one that is a good size and that I like (apparently hard to do ). On top of that...Ki needs a new cage too (a much bigger endeavor ).

Any other suggestions as to what I/he will need? I am sure that she is bringing everything that she has for him but I will definitely need to supplement.

Thanks again for all the advice and help!

I have 21 lovebirds.........they are just awesome.............It all started with one for me.........then two then 3...........I let mine out all at the same time..........for social time.........they are all adjusted to each other........I also have a Green Cheek conure and a Cherry Head Conure........all out together..........but for sure I wouldn't do it with the big bird out..........

You will fall in love.........lovebirds are like Lays Potato chips.......you can't have just one........that's what the breeder that I got my first one from told me...........seems to have proven to be true!
