Greenwing Macaw Vs. B&G & Scarlet

Hey there Everyone here I have a couple of questions. I was wondering why the Greenwing Macaw is more expensive than the B&G or the Scarlet? Is it because its better? What are the qualities of a greenwing macaw as a pet? I would also like to know the qualities of B&G and scarlet? PLease feel free to write about your relationships with your macaws or why you think one is better than the other one as pets. Also their talking ability? What do you think? Thank you for taking the time. Everyone with other macaws feel free to reccomend their species. :!: :!: :!:

I have a b&g who adopted us when he was 2. He is a bit nippy, but overall has a wonderful personality and he continues to learn new words all the time. I am a huge cockatoo lover, however, our household just wouldn't be the same without our Elwoodblue. I know nothing about the GWs or Scarlets so can't compare - sorry....... I do know that our b&g is delightful and I wouldn't trade him for anything!

I think Jody absolutely nailed it about the macaws. Its really about what you want. GWs are expensive because they are huge and take much longer to wean than the BGs. That means hands on extra time from the breeder and that's time they expect to be compensated for.

The GW is one of the gentle giants: the others being the Hys and the Buffons. Very mellow, generally but they can be a force to be reckoned with it over indulged or badly handled. A well-mannered GW is a gift from God and the envy of the neighborhood.

The Scarlets have long been considered the most beautiful of the macaws excluding only the Hys. They are typical redheads, however, and can be moody and, how shall I put it, sneaky? They are known to lure you over, offer their heads for skritches and then at the last moment, bite the heck out of you. However, the ones that are well behaved are diamonds! They are considered the smartest of the big macaws and are often the first choice among parrot show trainers. To put it into perspective, they are like border collies. Provide plenty of interesting diversion and they will blow you away. Don't give them the opportunity to "make up their own games".

My most favorite birds on this planet are the Blue and Golds. They are the total package. They are actually a medium sized macaw, so they don't require the really heavy duty cages that the Hys, GWs and Buffons do and are noticeably smaller than the average Scarlet. BGs just like people. They will choose a favorite as do all birds, but are usually curious enough to happily to go other family members. Much like the family Labrador retriever, they are fairly mellow, always ready to play and completely huggable. Of my four, all will allow me to kiss them anywhere and anytime without any resistance. They hold my heart.

I will tell you this: I have on 4 occasions set money aside to buy a GW. Each time, I've been distracted with a BG that I just had to have. I would still love to own a GW. In fact, I fell madly in love with a friends bird who just recently passed with PDD. I will NEVER get over that bird. He was the sweetest bird I've ever met.

You can't go wrong with either the BG or GW. It really comes down to the individual bird. Meet lots of birds and when they are ready, they will pick YOU out

if you are being drawn to a GW then, that is probably where your heart should go!!
my husband was chosen by the sweetest GW a couple of years ago and he is by far the most affectionate bird in our household. Magoo is the epitomy of a "gentle giant".
i highly recommend them. don't let their size intimidate you. they are awsome!
good luck in whatever macaw you may get.
