Question Got the new baby Greenwing home tonight...

Hey Guys, I got my baby Greenwing home tonight, she is about 5 months and fully weaned. She has not wanted a handfeeding in days the breeder said. I got her home after a terrible hour long drive, I held her the whole way, she was pretty good and cuddled most the way. I got her in the cage, and let her eat and rest a bit, I have not seen her drink as of yet. I let her stay asleep for about 2 hours and when i thought she was awake I offered to let her come out and play, that was about 5 mins ago, and she would not come out. She always wanted out before I brought her home. Any suggestions? Should I let her come out on her own when I try again tomorrow? Or maybe take her out if I have to? Any help about the first few days home, I would be very greatfull, Thanks Mandy

I think you need to let her simply fall asleep for the night. She is over stimulated and probably exhausted. You did remember to get the handfeeding stuff, right? Its very common for weaned birds of over a month to STILL revert to handfeeding. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that within 3 days, she'll be begging for handfeeding.

Hiya, Yes I do Have formula, I was told I may have to give her comfort feedings...But since I was nervous about using the plastic suringe, I was told I could just use a spoon or put it in a bowl. She wont seem to take anything from my hand I have offered her all kinds of diffrent foods. Im just really nervous theres something wrong with her, Her cage is alot bigger then her old one too. I hope she is acting herself again in the morning.

It may take a few days for her to fully settle down. She was born and raised in a loving environment for 5 months. Visitors came to see her and she enjoyed it. Then she's taken away from her home one day and put in a new place... she's going to be nervous and needs some time to adjust. Give her a day or two before trying to interact with her too much. Let her come out of her cage if she wants to, and if she does, go and get her.

Patience, patience patience. Even my new bird that I've had only a month now is STILL adjusting and changing every day. Tomorrow I'd leave the cage door open and sit next to it and talk calmly and sweetly to her. Whenever one of my birds first came home they wouldn't come of their cage on their own. Now the second I go for the door they are waiting and come out eagerly. It took days with some, weeks with others for this to happen. I always left the door open so they felt "free" to come and go as they pleased. All of my birds love love love their cage...it's their home. Congrats on the new baby, best of luck with her.

Hiya Guys,
Well this morning Gypsy Rose is sitting on top of the cage, I had placed a perch high up near the top of the dome, and she didnt seem to come down from it, so I removed it worring she would not come down to eat, That seemed to work, she ate a bit this morning and drank some warm water from a bowl on the floor. (thats how the breeder got her to drink) I have not seen her drink from inside the cage yet. She had some seed and kaytees rainbow softened. Im goin got try her on some mushie banannas this morning. So now she is coming out of the cage ok, But she really likes being on top on the cage. Which I know birds can get testy with. I need to get her a bird gym, and a swing for in the cage, I guess she liked the one in her old cage, but they didnt have it at any of the stores I have checked.

Purchase a postage scale and weigh her at least 1 time per week at the same time of day. If it goes down within a week then worry.

The bird is new, new home, new cage, new people---it will take time, stay calm and have patience.

Congrats!
