Microchipping

Hello,
Our local bird store is having a prominent avian Vet out to do exams, etc. . . but he is also offering microchipping.
Although my birds have had yearly exams by my Vet, I never had tham microchipped and was thinking that this might be a good idea. Does anyone out there have their birds chipped and if so, have you noticed any problems with it such as soreness, etc?
Thanks for any input.

Microchipping

Most vet's do knock birds out to mirco chip. Many people have an issue with this as it is possible that your bird will not wake up. I have no problem with my birds being knocked out for x-rays and the chances are slim that something will go wrong. The micro chip is about the size of a grain of rice and your call on whether to put your bird out while this is being done.
Bird bands can be removed or number filed off. Unless you have a DNA sample banked, then got ahead and chip. Send that DNA sample off as well.

our B&G and M2 are both chipped. the vet didn't knock them out, he just did the insertion of the chip like any other shot. after it was done, we spent some time after to watch for any signs of bleeding, but there was none. brought the birds home, tried to keep them quiet in their cages, but no go. they were up and playing around when they got home.

Joan,

I've had almost all 19 of my parrots microchipped...except the real small guys & have not had any problems. My ACV doesn't anesthetize them either...unless you're getting a very small bird chipped. It really is something that I would highly recommend having done. We have gotten several birds into the rescue that were able to be returned to their rightful owners because they had a chip.....so that right there IMO makes it worth it!

I watched as a couple of birds were chipped a week or so ago at the store. Neither bird fussed when they did the insertion and as stated above, they placed them on a perch to observe for a few minutes. I was quite surprised at how effortless the whole process went. I've seen more fussing and fighting over grooming. The person doing it said she has never had a bird react to the stick. We plan on getting our 3 monsters done this year.

How does the chip work? I wondered how the information is put in and retreived.

The bad thing is there are more than 1 chip manufacture and the readers only read the manufacture who made the readers chips-most vets do not have readers-so check around you before you have it done and see which brand is most widely used in your area
