Hi,

It might be a typical macaw smell that a few have. Try giving him several showers and see if it help. I have a blue and gold about the same age and he will get a musty smell if excited and around his girlfriend to much.

Also, try this: mix one capful of Johnson's baby shampoo in a quart of warm water and spray this on your bird. Let it stay on for a few minutes and then really rinse him off. A shower is a better way, but I suppose a spray bottle could wet him enough. It will make him smell better UNLESS he's got an infection.

Perhaps. If it is in the poop, it will be very unpleasant. And, once you clean the poop up, you won't smell the offending odor.

If the poop smells, he probably has some kind of bacterial infection. Have your vet run gram stains to see if there is gram negative bacteria present.

Some birds do have musky scents especially once mature and during breeding season. However, its not especially offensive. If this is stinky, there is a problem.
