Can my B&G be stressed...?

Hello bird lovers! I am back here today because I need some advice.

I took Pookie, my B&G, this past Saturday to get the nails and wings clipped. Needless to say she did not like it. But we got her/him (I think its a girl) home and she seemed fine.

Then yesterday I took her to get the DNA testing done. THey held her down kinda hard cuz she did not want to, they clipped a nail to get some blood out while she was still struggling to get out. She hated it and when it was over ran to me, her face was red like a tomato I took her home and she seemed very shaken up so I put her in her cage and filled the plates with food she loves. She seemed fine after that.

Today I get home from work and when she saw me there was no reaction at all! She ALWAYS jumps to the door of the cage and screams for me to go over there and take her out. We have a schedule with her, always take her out in the morning before go to work and take out when I get from work. This has never happen in about a year + that I've had her. I took her out and she was really calm. I tell my mom and she says that the same thing happened when she got home. No reaction at all, and that she had been really calm all day.

Is she stressed?

The only 2 things I did differently was last night that I gave her some of the hand feeding formula I used to give her. It's been in the freezer for about 10 months. It smelled like usual in the bag and when it was done, and she ate it and loved it. Can it be bad formula? The other thing is I gave her together with her fruits a vitamin I bought at the pet shop for her feathers. Its called Canopy Scientific Avian-Elite Canamins-F. I sprinkled some on the fruits.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Well, I think you should disgard the formula. Its old now and everything does have a shelf life even in the freezer.

It does sound like stress. After all, for the last 2 days when she was glad to see you, you took her out and roughed her up. Just talk gently to her and let her get her bearings.

Thanks. I have been spoiling her today since I got home!

They are also a lot like us after a stressful event, somethimes ya just want some quiet time for a bit to regain your center. It's up to us to recognize this and respect it.
I agree dump the formula. A few special treats, some gentle words and some quiet time and she'll be back to her darling self.

Maybe they handled her a bit too roughly when they clipped the nail? Some folks at bird stores are so rough that I just won't take mine back at all. I've found that at most stores actually. They get so rough because they do it all day long & get bit a lot. Maybe they injured her somehow? If she doesn't perk back up right away or if she eats or drinks less I'd definitely get more worried.

FYI: The only clue I had to how badly Charlie was hurt was that he was WAY too calm.
(The injury didn't look all that bad, at first. Feathers can hide a lot!)

Yep, give her a few days and she will be back to her ol' self.

I only saw the one picture of a partial "side" head shot...looked like a girl to me. The females have a shorter more rounded head. The males have a somewhat longer skull and more angular. DNAing is the only surefire way to tell though.
I know it's a bit late but if all you wanted was to test for the gender...it can be done with a few "freshly plucked" breast feathers nowadays at Avain Biotech. I did two of mine that way and taking the feathers didn't even have an affect on them...it was way too easy.
I wanted my birds DNA'ed so I would finally know if I was correct about looking at their heads and telling the sex. The results came back a couple of days ago and I was right.

Hope it's a girl since that is what you want.

What kind of diet is she on? Most birds don't need vitamin supplements if they are on the correct diet. It can actually be harmfull if they have too much vitamins.

I can't wait to see what sex she is.
