Question about Cage Size

I am new to the avian community. Will be bringing home a baby Macaw late August or September. Regularly visit the little guy while he is being hand fed at the bird shop. I purchased a beautiful cage through ebay the measures (actually size of the living space) 36"Hx32"Wx22"D. Can anyone tell me if this will be a sufficient size cage for a B&G Macaw? Thank you. Chuck

Well, if you can upgrade to a larger size, you really should. The MINIMUM size for a BG macaw is 40" x 30" x 6'. Their long tails will be trashed in a smaller cage.

As Big as Possible

Chuck,
If at all possible get the biggest cage you can. Especially if your new baby is going to be spending any length of time in it. They need the room not only for their tails but room enough to stretch their wings. Your fid will be much happier and so will you.

If you buy a used cage be sure to disinfect it thoroghly with Citricedel or Liquid Grapefruit Seed Extract ( 2 tablespoons to 3 cups hot water mixed in a spray bottle). Perches too! Btw 1 spray bottle's worth will clean approximately 1 large cage and 2 mediums.

Be sure to post pics when the new baby comes home!

Dear Outlaw and Darlie: Thank you for your responses. I already have this cage that I described. What I think I will do is take this smaller cage to my office and leave it there for when I bring the little guy to work for shorter term stays and purchase a larger cage for where he will be staying on a more permenant basis. Thanks for your insight. Chuck

New Cage Available

Dear Outlaw and others:

I managed to secure a larger cage at a price I can afford. It is real nice and bigger than my presnet cage listed above. The new interior dimensions are: 40"wx30"dx50"H. Do you think this would work for a B&G Macaw? I would appreciate any insight. Thank you. Chuck

That's terrific. The smaller cage at work is a great idea! Sounds like the larger one you found will be perfect!

All my birds ended up having 2 cages.....got tired of rolling them outside to the patio.lol Sooooo smaller cages for recess! Enjoy that new baby when the time comes!

That should be fine. Just be sure to think about how you want to hang the toys and swing. Macaws LOVE swings. That's another reason the larger cages are needed for the big birds. They also have big toys.

IMO I'd save some more pennies before I jumped to a bigger cage. You could be buying a 40x30, and still not have it big enough. I have three B&Gs. 1 is in a 40x30 DT plenty big enough. He's a calm bird. Oscar is in a 40x40. He's semi active. Tico is in a HQ dble Macaw w/ the center divider removed. Still not enough room. He uses every inch he has available. It will totally depend on the bird.
