macadamia nuts

Hello everyone. I'm getting ready to replenish my supply of nuts for my greenwing macaw and had a question. She doesn't seem to be too crazy for almonds lately so I thought I would try macadamia nuts. The website I use for nuts now has them in the shell. I read that they are the most difficult nuts to shell. My question is this.... Is a one year old greenwing strong enough to break into a macadamia nut? Thanks for any replies!!!

Arthur could (and still can :-) crack Macs at age 1 year. Even Ceilidh, my Scarlet, can eventually "saw" through them if he's motivated enough (although he usually isn't!).

if they want it badly enough, they will find a way to crack them open, haha.

since you dont know if he is gonna like them, you might wanna try cracking the shells a little bit at first, if he decides that he likes them, then you can just give them to him without cracking them. he might not wanna work to crack them open if he doesnt know what it is.

Maybe I should get a macaw! I can barely get them open (and dad grows them...yum)

Mine love macadamia nuts. Even Maui with his one leg will figure out a way to crack them, he pushes them against the bars until he has enough leverage to ply his beak into it an break it open.

Now, palm nuts are much harder to open. Maui can't get them open, but Milo will work on one for a looooong time. Those are fantastic ways of keeping a macaw busy and quiet on those loud days- if you can get your hands on some (*sing song* EEEEEBBBAAAYYY!!!!!)
