It really is all about aclimatization. I can't imagine living in a home 78 degrees. I'm sweating just thinking about it. Actually being on the cooler end is healthier because bacteria require higher temps to multiply. Maybe that's why my birds are always healthy.

Mine are from LakesideCA and NC.... I'm not trying to be snippity, my point is that MOST of our birds Don't come from a tropical environment.... they are acclimated to their/your home environment just as you are.

The most critical thing he should be discussing here is temperature change, not overall temperature.

If you're cold, they're cold, if you're hot, they're hot. Meaning an average person in an average environment. If you share that environment, you all should be acclimated fairly similarly. If it's 90 and suddenly drops to 70, you're going to be cold! And so are they....

So really, keep an eye on those temperature CHANGES.... and notice when you are using a sweater or blanket. They don't have a sweater or blanket. So if you have your house cooler, and you put on a sweater, maybe you should have a small oil filled heater for them; their "sweater".

Pay attention, use common sense... treat them like a child. If you think your 5 year old would be cold or hot... well, so will the birds.

If birds are acclimated to outside, they're not going to be acclimated to inside, or vise versa. Try to avoid dramatic changes.

Maui.... funny enough I use the birds as ENCOURAGEMENT to get my Dad to use the AC or Heat. He really feels guilty turning on the heat or air just for him in the house, and he really really needs to. It's necessary, in his health condition to not stress his body out with very hot or cold temperatures.

SO... I tell him if he is cold the birds are cold, if he is hot, they are hot.... and that he NEEDS to turn on the heating/air. It makes him less guilty feeling when he's not just turning it on for him alone ;-} Win-win

I keep a warn mist humidifier going in the birdroom/living room. It helps keep the room warmer and keeps the feather dust down on the Greys and Tiels. It gets cleaned out with bleach solution and the little wick pads get changed one a week. It's a Slant Fin. Nice machine. We're really happy with it.
