Exclamation runny nose

Mila (B&G) awoke with a stuffy head/runny nose. The discharge is clear and a session in the warm steamy bathroom air seemed to clear her sinuses. All other behavior and appetite appear normal...do I need to get her to the vet?

Maybe it was an allergic reaction to something. I got home yesterday afternoon and no runny nose-no sneezing. This morning same thing, no runny nose, no sneezing. So......nevermind about the request for help.

She's probably fine. Often, in the dry winter and fall months when we are heating our homes, they can get nasal irritation. You did exactly what your were supposed to do. A little shower steam seems to have opened her right up.

Please consider getting a humidifyer or vaporizer for her cage area. Ideally, we should try to keep their environments in the 45 to 50% humidity range. Be sure to clean filters often so that mold won't grow. With vaporizers, they usually have no filter. I actually prefer using them, but the have to be refilled often.

And, finally, occasionally, my large macaws decide to do "baths" in their water bowls. Since they are WAY too big to actually fit in the bowls, sometimes they will just wet their head.

Thanks Outlaw. I appreciate your response. The humidifier is a great idea. Down here in muggy Florida we don't usually need any help humidifying the air but we have had a few cold fronts move through (48 last night ) and the furnace is on. The house is dry. I knew about the steambaths from other posts that people like you kindly responded too! Hopefully with a humidifier this won't happen again. It really scared me. In all of the years that I have had my CAG I had never encountered a runny nose.

My BG Macaw has had some issues with this runny nose as well. We went to the Avian Vet and he said all was good, she sounded fine and looked great, but always be safe to get the vet check first, then when health problems are ruled out, a humidifier is a great idea and be sure to keep your friend warm at night by covering the cage and keeping the temp in the house good.!
