Big snowstorm,lost electricity

for 14 hours the other night. Was a total nightmare. We have no chimney, probally the only house in Mass that dont got one. Well we had 13 inches of snow and lost the electricity. We have a little genarator and my guy was using it for the birds,we have a radiator type heater that we put right near Reno and Houdinis cages and we took the duckies heat lamp and used that too for them. Well my guy got very sick,he got carbon monoxide poisoning. He had the genarator in the garage and he had to keep puttin gas into it when it ran out.I had been telling him to put it outside or else you can get sick, but some men never listen. But he did end up putting it outside, after he got terribly sick, chest pains, puking and a pounding headache and couldnt think straight. So all that night I had to keep checking on my birds to see if they were all right,i was scared that they would get to cold,it was very cold.under 50 degrees in the house and i had to keep checking my guy to see if he was breathing. So im wondering how cold is to cold? We keep our house at 68 degrees in the winter. An all of sudden drop like that, can they handle that? They are fine and handled it great.Thank goodness....

Boy, you WERE lucky. I know its hard to plan for this, but anything that burns fossil fuels MUST be outside. Can you put your birds in small carriers and heat one small room for all of you including your boyfriend and you? That's what we did 2 winters ago when we lost power for a few days. I keep an Aerobed inflated downstairs for just that. I have a pellet stove down there and a few extra cages and all of my carriers. The generator will run the pellet stove auger and an electric heater. I also have a PVC gym (about 6 feet long) that I hang toys on when I'm making them. I can simply put the birds on there during the day in shifts, if necessary. We survived for 3 days using that technique.
