MaiTai's vet appointment, some good, some bad

Well MaiTai had his vet appointment today. It started out pretty good, I got him out of his cage on the first try and he went into the travel cage fine. We got him there and there were a couple of other birds in the waiting room and he talked to them and fluffed up for me. He hung out as close to me in his cage as possible. When we got in the room, and I took him out he stuck his head against me and cawed and shook and snuggled as far against me as possible, scared. The poor thing!!

We weighed him, and he only weighs just over 1200 grams. the vet had to look at his DNA sex results three times before he believed he was a male. He said he had never seen a male so small. He also said that he looked stunted, that his head was too large and his body much too small. he was very good with him, he held him and talked gently to him and snuggled with him for a minute before appologizing and restraining him to do the rest of the exam. I have never heard such screaming he screamed constantly while we all tired to reasure him and do the exam as fast as possible. He got his beak and nails trimmed, blood taken, all his new feathers examined and a few pulled that were growing in bad. By the end when the vet and the tech set him down carefully on the floor, he was so scared he ran towards me and huddled on my foot still screaming. The vet got down and laid down on the floor with him and talked to him and tried to get him to perch on his hand but MaiTai was so scared he could only grab the hand he couldn't quite perch. It was awful. I dont think he's ever been to the vet.

Finally I picked him back up and cuddled him and he really did CUDDLE, i mean head under my arm, wings out, fluffed up and absolutely not moving at all. We sat there for about half an hour so he could calm down and I talked to the vet about diet and behavior and then when it was time to go he immediatly went into his cage to go.

His gram strain was normal, he looked good besides being a bit malnurished and stunted, and the vet said he was a lovely bird besides being a "mini greenwing"

I had to cook the poor baby some sweetpotatoes and warm bannana to calm him down when we got home, what a tramatic start!

It's all pirates over here. Pirates rule, Ninjas drool.

I'm glad MaiTai survived the trauma of a visit to the vet. Hopefully it will get better over time, and once he's used to being out and about in public or riding in cars.

That explains it. I told you his beak was huge. He looked like the larger GW's to me. But remember I couldn't get him out of his cage and didn't want to force him, so I didn't get to judge whole body size. I bet with some TLC from you he will gain weight and be back to pair. I'm glad you have him. Sort of seems like you rescued him? huh? That is how I feel with this too. I am debating just giving her $400 dollars and never sending him back.

On a good note the vet report was good.

Tamaran-

Do it- you won't regret it! I'm really frustrated with the way MaiTai was taken care of even after he was taken out of the dog crate. he was almost never handled with bare hands, only towels, and never taken to the vet. Part of me is really frustrated that he's sick, but I already love him to peices and it doesnt really make a difference to me. I just wish I could go back in time and beat his old owner.

Must work on hubby!!!

I don't want to use flooding with this M2 he is scared enough. I want to use Positive reinforcement only. Without wings flooding tech. can cause him ALOT of harm in the long run. So that being said, I will tell her it will take MUCH longer than expected. I can make my decision later, I will have time. I know he is not going back there, but don't tell hubby. K?
