Talking Newbee to the Bird Board

Hello to all! We are new to the Bird Board so I wanted to introduce ourselves. My name is Chrystal and my husband is Garon. We bought our first bird, a blue and gold macaw about 3 weeks ago. His name is Mango. I will try to post a pic. He will be 9 weeks old on Monday. We are already soooo attached to him. We are fortunate to have found a great breeder near our home so we get to visit Mango everyday.

I'm sure we will need lots of advise. We have read lots of books and have learned so much, but you guys with experience is sometimes the best way to go.

I was wondering if we could get some advise on as to when to bring this baby home. I am hand-feeding him one of the feeding a day at the bird store but since we both work, we will not be able to do all of them daily but I was wanting to bring him home when he goes to 2 feeding a day. At what age do they go to 2 feeding a day..(approx).. Also, any advise as to waiting until he is FULLY weaned or would almost weaned be ok.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give some background.

Thanks in advance for all your advise.

Chrystal

Chrystal,

If this is your first bird to feed, I think you should wait until he is weaned, which can vary—usually 16-20 weeks is normal. Also, once he is weaned, let him stay with the breeder for a week or so to prevent regression... macaws can regress an want formula if taken too early from their breeder.

I understand your excitement over your new baby, but I think you would be happier if you waited, remember, excitement can build...

Best of luck!
