Paperwork on Hyacinth Macaws

Evening All.

I've been trying to find information on this little minefield all day with little success. I was hoping some Hya owners on here might be able to shed me some light!

What paperwork exactly do Hyacinth Macaws require?

I am aware they are endangered and listed on CITIES, and require papers of some description but I'm not aware what, and google fails me on trying to educate myself further.

A friend of mine and myself are interested in a pair to keep as pets for the 6-7 years until they become sexually mature and then he can have them both over spring/summer in his aviary to breed. We hope to help out the local Zoos with their conservation efforts by giving them some chicks, as Hya's are golddust down this end of the UK. (England)

The birds I have seen do not come with any paperwork. And i refused to buy them due to this. I KNOW they are supposed to have papers, all CITIES endangered list are. I obviously don't want to be snagged up in any secret black market activities as I know smuggling of the eggs is big money in some countries. I'm also aware the smuggling of chicks and adult birds still goes on. ( Part of me does have to think how the HELL would you hide a 30" bird?? )

Anyway, I'm wary of what I buy, and having dealt many years ago with some captive raised CITIES animals, I remember the whole papers thing. However I've since had a motorbike crash and my head went into the roof of a Ford Mondeo at 40mph so my memory isn't so hot any more

I was also wondering if you need a specific license to breed them in captivity?

Any help greatly appreciated! I know it's a minefield question, sorry

Many thanks,
Regards,
Sophie.

Try contacting your local fish and wildlife chapter. They should be able to get you closer to what you are looking for.

I'm lucky, I found a guy selling 'em cheap as he's off to another country soon and my mate is a parrot breeder so we're going halves.

Thanks, I'll contact defra, I've had little luck with CITES... "Sorry i cant help you... but try this email..." followed by "Sorry i cant help you... but try this email...!"

I'll get there in the end

Please be leary of this as a lot of scams are going on with this specific breed usually cameroon is involved. Just a heads up.

We went to see them, turned out they were stolen (I took the ring numbers while handling the birds) and reported him when I found out after getting home.

Hopefully the poor previous owner might get his beautiful birds back.

More than a few types of scams out there, this being another

Live animals shouldn't be used as any type of bait.

Sorry that they were stolen, but also glad that you didn't get taken.
They are such beautiful birds. I have a friend that has been breeding them for something like 25 or 30 years. That's the U.S. though, so doesn't help you out.

I can't help with the paperwork issue but I spent a day studying Hyacinth Macaws in the wild in Brazil. By observing their natural behaviour in the wild you can learn a lot about what they need to flourish as companion birds (purchased legally from a reputable breeder of course). Unfortunately, that won't happen for me in Australia, they would cost more than a house!

I have heaps of photos of Hys on my blog and some video clips too.
Start here and see the entries for the next 3 days.
