Ours just saw me in the shower and ran in with me... there was no real process. Most macaws and Amazons love water!

He should be able to let you know if he wants it. As often as he wants. Not to hot, not to cold. Drafts are a no-no.
If the shower handles are such that your macaw could change the temp settings by perching on the knobs, make sure all showers are 100% supervised. A bird could be hurt/killed by burns.

I have been giving my BG Macaw a shower twice a week and he is still not use to it. He does not scream but makes himself very skinny and acts like he is scared to death. I have got one of those Rubbermaid bathrub wire racks and he stands on that while I gently spray him. I hope he learns to like it because he looks so pretty after he gets out.

The water directed up and over your bird so the water changes direction just above the bird so he/she receives a gentle mist is what is preferred by many people that bathe birds. That way the water has as little force as possible and does not overwhelm them. If the bird is closing their eyes, it may be too forceful. Water directly overhead from a shower head is too hard of a blast of water to be enjoyed my most birds even larger macaws.
Many birds prefer a bath to a shower. My Sa-Sa loves a bath, but dislikes a shower some days. A new clean spray bottle on mist is a wonderful water toy for some birds. Only give them as much as they want.

Ernie
Our parrot is pretty much my parrot. I get all the cuddles and snuggly moments but when it come to a shower, my husband gets his time. They are in there for some time....and when they are done...lol...my husband dries Ernie off with the blow dryer ( on low) and then he comes out for his treat and then into his cage. Both enjoy their time together in the shower. A great bonding time for them.

I will say, and unfortunately I don't know why, Ducky just hates being in the shower and hates it when I mist him. I don't know the history behind that. However, and I hope nobody gets ticked off at me, but I force him to shower. I put him in the tub and simply spray him with the water till he's soaked (a very gentle mist). Since he hates it so much, I only do it a couple of times a week.
And no, I can't put a perch in there -- because he was hit with a stick in a previous home, perches scare the daylights out of him. The only perches he will deal with are the perches in his cage. If I put a new one in his cage, he pitches a fit and won't go in and I have to acclimate him to a new perch so I really don't do that. I don't know why he's so water phobic. I will say that he loves how he feels afterwards. What I do is soak him, then I pick him up and wrap him in a towel and walk around with him wrapped in a towel till the water is soaked up ... and he is eating up that attention ... LOL ... you should hear him enjoying the towel time it's simply funny. |
