Green winged macaw hatched today

Hello everyone, I just wanted to write you to let you know that my Baby Green Winged Macaw hatched today. I'm so excited and cannot wait until September 15th, This is the approx time, when I can bring her or him home. That is, if she or he is weaned by then. I live in a Condo with 80 year old neighbors who are all hard of hearing. i can tell because their T.Vs are so loud. i have one family with a crying baby down stairs. i live on the top floor. i have been battling with my Condo Rep due to them saying that the Green Winged is too loud for Condo living. My rules state that i can have 2 birds per unit, it does not state what type of birds. i currently have a Male Eclectus who is very quiet. I trained him to be this way. Whenever he would scream for my attn, i would alway answer with a low voice from another room. I found this tip on the internet and seems to have worked. it's been 2 years with my Eclectus and my neighors don't even know he is here. I plan on bonding and training my GW the same way. I know that they can be loud at times but are not known for long periods of screaming. I belond to a Bird Club where there are 2 other Grenn Wings, and never heard them utter a word or sound. my breeder also advised that the GW would make a great condo Bird, What are your thoughts. Love to hear from anyone who has a GW. Thanks JJones1719

Um, OK? Great Condo bird? A Macaw?? I have one that is QUIETER THAN MOST (oops caps lock) but when he feels good he can wake the dead. Have you been to the other Green wings home when they dont know that your there? Yes they can be pretty quiet most of the time but if your already arguing with your Condo Rep I feel your opening a can of worms here. I dunno, just my feelings on the subject - I would never attempt to be able to live in any kind of condo or apt with any of my large birds and many think they are so well behaved but I live on five acres and my neighbors over ten acres away can hear them on a nice day when they get "happy to be birds". I have a Harliquin - GW/ B&G cross

My greenwing is quiet most of the day, but like the other people have said, when she is pissed off or happy, she can make sounds that will make your ears ring. That alone makes a macaw unsuitable for condo living where noise levels are an issue. Greenwings are usually infrequent in their macaw screams, but they do make them and when they do, look out!! Ours is more of an evening noise maker. Whether she is macaw yelling or talking, she's doing it so the neighbors can hear her. Her cage is in another room and sometimes we will put her in there if she won't stay on her play stand and she gets mad! Again, look out!! I would hate for you to get a macaw and then have such troubles with your condo association. Greenwings are awesome, loving birds and don't make as frequent screams as other macaws, but they are macaws and it is in their nature to hear themselves roar!

Congats, JJones...how exciting! So, we have a GW (11 months old now) and a B&G (10 months old now), and we live here in MD. I think you live in MD, too, right? My Macaws seem to be relatively quiet, except for a few outbursts twice a day. The morning is fairly short, just a call or two, sometimes not even. I'm thinking that maybe they don't really feel the need to call much in the morning because they are caged in the center of activity of our house, so their whole flock (bird, people and dog) are right there with them?

The nosiest ours get is when we come home and they hear the garage door go up. They are really calling for us then - longer and louder than anything we hear from them in the am. (Of course maybe its not so much that they miss us, but that they know its going to be time for their afternoon "birdie treats"!) During the day, on days I work from home, they talk a bit, but they are young and really only say "hello" and "hi" and do some assorted mumbling at this point. When they talk, it has really not been much louder than a person talking very exuberantly. I think, though that Milo Macaw had a different experience with her B&G named Maui. Seem to remember a post where Maui was yelling and screaming words and phrases, not just bird calls, to the extent that the folks in neighboring houses heard him. So, ughhh, don't know what to tell you. It probably depends on the individual bird. I can tell you that when they do let out a call, my GW is far louder than than B&G or my Amazon. (Or probably both combined, but then she's a much bigger bird than either one of them.)

So, maybe someone with some more experience can help you, but this is what our short-lived experience (only 5 months with our Macaws but 19 years with our Amazon) has been.

Well, I never said that the Macaws were a Great Condo or Apt Bird, My breeder did, that's why I am asking for advise. i only know what I have read and advised from others on this site and Breeder. I've been at the GW homes when they did not know I was there and still they have been for the most part pretty quiet. I am not stupid, thinking that the GW will not scream or make a loud call. I only know that if a Macaw or any bird screams for a long period of time, there is something wrong with them. It is not normal for a macaw or anyother bird to scream all day. if that were the case, I don't think any of us would own Parrots. I do plan on moving into a shore home where it's me and my feathured friends and lots of water. I want to start either a rescue or Aviary. I have the funds, time and love to give a great home to a feathured friend. So please don't think you opion does not matter because it does. I really would like to hear from people who own a Green Winged macaw since they are so different the other Macaws or Hybrids. Thank you for your time. Love to hear from others, JJones1719

Gucci, yes, I live in MD, I belong to the Baltimore Bird Fanciers, you should join, we meet every 3rd Sunday at the Towson library and you can bring your birds, infact they want you to. Thank you for letting me know what it's like with your feathured friends. I am still on the fence as to what to do, I really want to do what is best for myself, neighbors and mostly for the GW. Thanks agin to all JJones1719

I would like to look into the Baltimore bird club, but I also show dogs and so I am gone most weekends. But, with the way the price of gas is going, I may be home more this summer!

I honestly don't know how to counsel you on your dilemma. I really do feel like it is an individual bird thing, but birds will be birds. Maybe I am lucky with my 2. I really do think, aside from the occasional outburst, they are fairly quiet. Of course, they are also young, and I don't know what maturity will bring. But, when they have that occasional outburst, my neighbors, who are acres away, can hear them. The good thing is, it is always (so far) at a reasonable time of day. Its not like they are rocking the house at 10 pm. Not sure if that helps you or not. A very tough decision you have...

Gucci, you're right, It is hard and as much as i really want a GW, I really don't want to bother my neighbors. My breeder also has many other birds including other eclectus. I first wanted to get another bird for my male eclectus since I work from home everyother day, and did not want to leave My eclectus ( guapo ) alone. Then When i joined the Bird club, I fell in love with the GW. What great bird. i have lots of time to make up my mind. i really don't want to rush into this. Good luck with your show dogs. that's really cool. your right, gas is such a joke now a days. i too will be staying home this summer. i will enjoy my shore home. Thanks again. JJones1719
