At what age are they typically considered full-grown?

Or, when are Macaws typically at their "adult weight"? Not sure if that is the way to phrase it, so I hope you know what I mean. My 10 month B&G and my 11 month old GW are still gaining weight. When should we expect to see that slowing down, or leveling off, without being worried? I did a search on the internet, and I can find average weight per species, but not when they might achieve their adult weight.

Phew! Just from what my veterinarian has told me and my personal experience, macaws ( not the mini macaws) can weigh anywhere from 900 to 1500 kg I believe. Just depends on the bird. My macaw just turned 3 and he weighs 1130 kg, but just went through a molt and he usually loses a little weight going through the molt. His last weight (w/o molt) was 1154 kg. He is lean but very very healthy. My vet also said he'd rather have them lean than obese. He said obesity is very very bad for birds. Others may be able to give you some more info as well.

Well, Tiki, the B&G is a little guy, but we could tell he would be on the small side. He is just one little bundle of cuteness wrapped in blue and yellow feathers! He was hovering around 960 grams for a while, and now is up to 1030. When we bought him he was the youngest B&G there, but only by a couple of weeks, yet he was the smallest. Makes no difference to us, as it was his personality and temperament that we were attracted to. What he lacks in size, he makes up for in heart.

Boudica, the GW is 1145 grams of pure tomboy. She was 1053 grams when we got her a couple of months ago. So. they both seem to be gaining. It made me wonder when they would level off...

growing

Your bird may look grown at 4 to 6 months. Your bird may stop gaining his/her final weight at 6 to 12 months. Your bird is mentally/sexually mature at about 15 years old. These are all just numbers, your millage will vary.

ive read several times that your birds continue to "fill out" until they are fully sexually mature.....not sure how true that is though, but i know they are still growing when they reach ~1 year....

The weight of a bird goes to a high point as he/she is in the nest. Then as the bird gets more mobile and gets ready to fly, some weight drops off. Then it will gradually go back up again. It rarely ever attains the high weight of the nestling. This is from my expirence bottle feeding birds. In the wild if I remember correctly, the numbers are similar.

In macaws (even adults of any age) the only real way to know if your bird is healthy is to weigh it daily. Sickness can slip in and not be seen except the weight fall off. If you are not weighing your birds, you may not catch it until it is too late to easily correct something serious.

The vast opinion from many avian vets is that GWs, Scarlets, B&Gs, Military, and Blue-throats attain a "final weight" around 3 years ... Hys and Buffons reach their "final weight" around 5. Of course, hormones and other variables can effect a weight so it is recommended that macaws be weighed every two weeks as adults at a minimum so you can keep track of their progress.
