macaw with swollen cheeks???

My B&G has swollen cheeks this evening. I'm worried, because a few things have happened recently. The nearest avain vet is over an hour away.

1) One of my dogs caught my bird by the neck the night before last night, but he wasn't bleeding and was acting normally afterward.

2) I started using an herbal formula to help biting, screaming, and other agressive behaviors last night. I'm wondering if he is allergic???

3) I got some new toys along with the herbal formula. They are "natural" toys made of coconut shells, palm frons and other types of natural products. I put them in his cage today. Maybe he is allergic to something in one of them???

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Janiekay

im sorry but you need to get to your macaw to the vet asap cause slaiva from dogs isnt healthy for macaws also he might have internal injuries ya never know also just call the avian vet and talk to them first so please for the health of your macaw take him to the vet
dont wanna take chances as they are very sensitive

I would also NEVER recommend letting him play with a puppie,no matter how well they are getting along...a puppies hunting instinct could kick in at any moment and even playing, dog saliva is poisonous to birds.

I agree with birdmommaof2. Parrots are very good at hiding pain, because in the wild if they show any signs of being weak, the predators know to go to them first.
I would go to your vet asap, because this could be a serious problem.
I don't mean to scare you, but I figure it's better safe than sorry, right?

Hi,

If your bird is hurt or scratched it needs to go to an avian vet! I have many macaws and would not wait for an instant if I thought they we hurt. Scratches or wounds are going to need an antibiotic which you will need to get from your vet.

You can contact me privately and I can help you should your bird be in pain.
