Anyone Own Severe Macaws?

I own Angel who came to me two yrs ago. He's approx. 20 yrs old, a dna'd male, plucks feathers, has cataracts--and I believe is slightly hard of hearing. He's had a tough life and came to us with the name.

He loves me---but no one else!!

Tell me about yours?!

Thank you for taking care of L.B.!!! Sometimes it takes a person like you to show the onry ones the love they need.

Angel has his days too!

I always remind myself that his life is 10 times better than it was before he arrived. he was in a parakeet cage that was so small his tail was bent on the end.....

I swear sometimes Angel growls.....he's grouchy but it is worth it when he nuzzles me or curls up and falls asleep on me.

Angel doesnt talk and am curious how many have severes that talk and how many don't.

I have 1 pair of Severes & 4 pets. My pair are about 17 yrs. old. I did a lot of research on them before purchasing. They have the attitude that I like. Mine all have their moments. They do need a lot of handling in order to keep a sweet personality. Most of them do become 1 person birds. When I bought our pair, they came with 2 babies that I handfed. We kept Dudley. He is nervous but sweet. My twins (teens) & hubby can handle him. But mostly he loves me. Shilo I got back after the people had a baby. He has some problems to work out. I've had him back now for 2 yrs. He doesn't scream like they said he did. He mostly yells at himself to "Shutup" He has a slight biting problem at times but we are still working on that. He just loves to cuddle with me. The best thing about getting him back was, He remembered us!!! The girls (Barnum & Riley) are my birds only. They give my hubby a hard time. They all talk. The girls don't say as much as the boys though. My male breeder Mac can talk in sentences, but its mostly jabber. It sounds good though, LOL!! He goes on & on & dances. Molly his mate don't talk at all. I can tell you I love how they just roll over on their backs & cuddle with their foot up to their head as I scratch them & they use their foot to help. One of my females is a plucker. She really has her moments at times. In fact she showed me one of her moments tonight. I love them A LOT!!! They can be loud too. Our Cag tells them to "shutup" when they let loose. We love them.

I actually met Pam just after I got Chi Chi, 5 years ago. I was thinking about adding a second Severe, and Pam had a fresh clutch for sale. Funny how owning birds makes for new friends.

Chi Chi is a wonderful little companion. Visitors here always comment on how pretty he is and he has a decent vocabulary. He is definitely a one person bird, but will step up and do so very quickly to just about anyone. Of course, he can't keep still on anyone other than me. He is not really a screamer, for they can be the MOST obnoxious little creatures when they do, so I know I've been very, very lucky there. He's probably one of the smartest birds here. He picks up new words quickly, can open just about any kind of closure and is a born performer. He currently has a crush on Lori. His eyes glow orange whenever she comes into the room. He does his best routine to garner her favors. She is, however, afraid of him. He gave he a "love bite" once and that really frightened her. Her only other bird experience was Aspen, Cat's Hahns. Frankly, Aspen's bites were just about as bad. He just wanted her undivided attention.

Chi Chi is my mother's favorite bird. She thinks he's the most handsome and he knows it. He does, however, lack "bird" skills. He is pretty much despised by every other bird here. My Quaker, Tilde, sometimes plays with him, but for the most part only Radar (Miss Congeniality) will even sit on a stand with him. She apparently has some special thing about her that makes all other birds here like her. Its really remarkable.

I think folks that can appreciate Quakers for all their orneriness can probably be expected to fall hard for Severes. They are pretty, quirky little characters.

Pamela

I thought about adding a second severe, Angel pulls his feathers like blue blazes---I was thinking the company may be just what the doctor ordered.

Angel is about 20 so I'd need an older bird that wasn't too aggressive.

Angel acts like he wants to play with our cockatiel on occasion, of course, I wont let him. I'm afraid one bite, the cockatiel would be gone.

That is great to know Jodi, I got two new blue and golds in September, they've been in separate rooms up to about 3 weeks ago. Now their cages face each other. Bart seems a bit more freaked and hasn't been eating well etc. The other two are less afraid and come over to sit on her cage door and on top of her cage. She hates it and goes as far away from them as she can get. I'm hoping she'll get more used to it. She seems ok until they come to visit, but when they visit her she's not very happy.

Jake went to L.Bs cage and L.B. would fluff up and say "Hi L.B" and just look crazy. After a month or so of that I put their cages side by side, Jake would go in his and sleep in his hut and L.B. would sit on the outside right above Jake. Now they share a cage, and the playstand. They are in my bedroom because Jake hates the big birds and tries to attack them. They go in and out of their cage as they please. I am soooo happy they like each other and glad that they are both boys and not a pair. L.B. never really seemed to know how to act like a bird, he didn't climb, or play with toys. Now he climbs all over and he chews wood and does about anything Jake will do.
Jodi,

Our severe is very quiet and talks with a whisper. He likes his cage mate Mango our Caninde macaw, they have lived together for 3 years. When Mango and Kasi are out of their cage; they hang out with the other birds, Mango with the Buffon's, and Kashi with the Blue and Golds, go figure!

Since we are all talking about Severes, how much does everyones weigh? L.B. is 425 grams, he has held right at that weight since the first recorded weight I got on him almost 3 years ago.

Kashi is smaller at 368g
