New macaw cage suggestions

I am looking for a new cage for Big Mac our blue and gold. The cage he has now is starting to get quite old and needs repainted at the very least but I would rather buy a new one.

That being said any suggestions? Let me know what size/type cage you would choose if you could get a new one (but still within reason LOL!) If I had tons of cash I would simply go get the largest stainless steel cage there is and no questions ask but since I do try to keep purchases a bit lower give me more suggestions.

I am currently looking at the Double Macaw Cage (and going to let hm have the whole cage not dividing it in two. The cage is int. 65"x32"X58" and ext. 73"x40"x70". Looking on ebay and through stores it looks like it will cost around $550 to have it shipped to me.

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of this cage if they have it or else suggest another cage that would be better but not cost tons more. $500 was supposed to be my budget (hubby says LOL!) but the extra $50 won't matter although an extra $100 or two would. So help me out what would be your top choice macaw cage if you could spend around that amount and where could you buy it at etc.

My suggestion would be the Kings Cage Model 406, but there are lots of them out there now. I wouldn't go any smaller than the size of a Model 406. They need room to stretch. Its what I have for Newton and its great - sturdy and heavy as all get out.

The double macaw cage I was talking about is larger than the one you mentioned. I checked it out and the Kings Cage #406 is quite a bit smaller than the double macaw cage I am wanting. The Kings Cage is only 29" deep while the double is 32" deep interior (three inches difference there). The kings cage is 46" wide while the double is 65" wide interior (so almost but not quite two feet wider) now in height I do lose a bit of space the Kings is 58" wide interior while the double is 52" wide interior. So I lose 6 inches in height but gain two feet between depth and width. It also weighs close to 250lbs so should be pretty heavy duty. And like I said we of course wouldn't be using the divider. The one you mentioned was actually my second choice in the powder coated (can't afford the stainless steel) but I thought if possible unless someone has a larger suggestion or else has a reason to dislike the double I would go with it.

Is there anyone who has actually used this cage and either likes it or dislikes it.

I will try to post a link or two to a site with the double macaw cage, tell me what you think of it. Let's see if this works

I looked at that same double macaw cage at a local pet shop. Loved the size, but the door was waytoo small. I just about climb in the cages to clean them. I could reach the back but not the sides or corners. I completely ruled that cage out after seeing it in person.
Let us know which one you pick. I may be a copy cat, as we're cage shopping too.

Thanks!! That was one of the things I wanted to hear. Since I have no where even remotely close that sells cages like that (all are african grey size or lots smaller) I can only go by pictures. That's why I wanted someone who actually owned the double or any others they loved/hated and could tell me about them. From pics the door looks huge but pics can be very deceiving. I wanted to try and find door measurements on one of the sites if they have it. Or I can always go with my second choice.

I do have another question. What abou the Silverado Dometop offered through Fosters and Smith. It is still larger than the kings cage 406 and 506 with a nice large door. Anyone have any experience with it or know any stores besides them that sells it at a lower price or at auction like on ebay? It is within my budget but usually you can find them lower priced if at some place like ebay

We recently purchased 2 double macaw cages by Kings the Economyline ELTx6434 for 4 of our Macaws.I feel for the price it was well worth it and there was no damage or anything like some of the other companies we have dealt with in the past. Our birds were also very happy as well.We would buy from Kings again.

The Silverado Dometop cage looks really good, actually. Although I haven't seen it in person, it appears big since they have a woman half in the cage in the display picture! I like the uniqueness of the door, being rounded and all. I think it would be great!

I have a Kings and the strength and weight is phenomenal! Those bars wont bend. One thing I want to say about cages I recently discovered and LOOoove love. I have dogs....some of the cages out there have it made so there is a big space between the tray and the bottom grate. My dogs can/and do get in there and rummage around for snacks. I recently got a cage where the bars continue all the way down to the tray. Case closed - NO doggie snacks and I like it that way.

If you want to stay in your budget I would look for a bird mart(expo). When we went to the last one I saw a double for about $400. And also it allows you to see what it looks like in person. When we went there were tons of people and I just asked random people questions and brreders, as they were bird people all but one person was happy to talk birds and stuff. And you can talk some of them down a little to save even more money. I would leave hubby at home, mine told me no a lot and then took my money and card to limit me. Good luck finding your cage.

bird cages/ other

Just a note that you might consider. Our blue and gold has slept FREE on a metal ring in the livingroom for many years. Just go to a welder and have him do a big lightweight band of metal in a circle with a wooden perch on the bottom half of the ring, welded into the sides of the ring. Have him attach a two foot chain at the top of the ring to hook into the ceiling and then cover it with a metal cylinder so the bird can't climb up the chain and eat anything near the ceiling, like wooden beams. I put newspaper beneath the ring every night to catch her droppings and she can't imagine sleeping anywhere else. This kind of freedom, if possible every day, is wonderful for macaws. Otherwise, the biggest cage you can find, then fill it with branches (with no leaves _ stuck into the cage in many directions.
