Mini macaws are wonderful birds. I won't talkt about Hahns or Yellow Collared cause I do not own these species ("theses species do not own me" would be more correct ;-))
I have here a Severe called Arnold. Severes are the biggest mini macaws. Just like it has been written, they become very often one person birds. If you wanna have a family pet, I thing you shouldn't pick a Severe. Mini Macaws are just like their BIG brothers in smaller packages. They are very active birds who always have to be in interaction with someone (human beings or birds) to be happy. Severes can indeed bite you hard and be very cranky and nippy. I do know several Severes owners who often compare them with Scarlets. |

I almost had a Severe because the seller was telling me that he was the sweetest bird that he had and at the time he also had a hand fed Blue and Gold. I was initially afraid of the size of the B&G and was intimidated by the beak, and besides the Severe took to me the first day I met him so I decided to get him. The next week when I came in to visit the Severe I went to hold him, he was giving me all the right vibes and body language and stepped right up, but within about two seconds he just bent down and took a chunk of flesh right out of my wrist, causing me to reevaluate my impending purchase. The seller said "Wow that is surprising! He never bit me like that!" I just wrote it off as that was just a one time thing and that with time and more visits the Severe would warm up to me and become the bird that I initially met the first time there. NOT! The next week there I think he saw me coming, cause the same thing happened all over again!!!! right then I said "Enough is enough! He might have been hand fed but I am getting tired of feeding him my hands!!!!!"
So while I was administering first aid to the gaping hole in my hand I was standing right next to the B&G playstand (not realizing it, 'cause like I said before- I was a bit intimidated by the large macaws) and then all of a sudden I felt something sharp on my shoulder, and then something heavy on it within a split second! I turned my head in time to come BEAK TO EYEBALL with Hannah, she just looked at me and gave me a sweet little Macaw squawk, and proceeded to disassemble my hat. I just froze cause the beak on that beast is three times the size of the Severs' so I figured three times the damage. Needless to say it was love at 1st sight, her and I bonded instantly, once I relaxed around her it was even easier. The seller told me that I am the only other person that he knew that would let me handle her. The point that I am trying to get across is that the bird will choose you, I have learned that whether or not I have a preference for a certain type of bird, it doesn't matter. The bird will find you. Most of the time it will work out when it comes to having your preference of species but sometimes it doesn't I wanted the Severe but ended up with the B&G, she is just the sweetest bird that I have ever had, and the whole family can handle her, play with her, feed her, ect... and have not been bitten whatsoever (Hannah knows it would upset her daddy) And when it comes to the big beaks? don't be afraid of them, I am still really surprised how gentle Hannah is with her beak, although when she is rough housing she doesn't realize her strength but that comes from being a baby still and she learns fast. Also try to get a hand fed one that is from a reputable breeder. Try different birds of all sizes you won't regret it, you will know which one is the right one for you. It is better to have one in your family that will bond with you and your family.................Just my two cents.........LMB |
