Mini Macaw Info Plz

So I was at a really neat bird only store the other day and they had a few Mini Macaws. Can anyone give me some information about these cool birds. There was a Hahn's in with the conures and he was really neat, but I have seen some posts on here about Hahn's being very nippy. Are all mini macaw's similar in temperment? Are the Severe's and Hahn's and Nobles all very different? I have 2 kids but this would be MY bird, and I am still very worried about larger birds with those big beaks.

Any info would be great.

Thanks!

I have had a Hahns Macaw since November. I don't know whether to say he is nippy or not. He doesn't bite me so that it hurts but he does use his beak a lot almost as a warning or to show his perceived authority (he likes to think he is pretty tough, like one of the big birds). I would never say he is a mean bird and he doesn't draw blood but he is a nibbler. This would never have dissuaded me from getting him. The little guy is my buddy, even if he can be a monster! He would be happy to spend his entire day with me. He is my bird. If I am in a room he could care less about anybody else. I love the little guy. I can't say anything about the others but I think they are pretty good too. Any book I've read may allude to the Hahns being a bit nippy but they also almost always talk about what a great pet and 'beginner parrot' they can be.

I hope some of this helps you.

Here's a photo of me and Beaker (not sure which one he is in this photo, it got a little confusing!) and his brothers/sisters today when we visited them at the breeder. They are Hahns Macaw babies...about 8 weeks old, perching well, and just starting to play with solid food. I can't wait for him to come home!

I have three minis... A Yellow Collared Macaw, A Severe and A Hahns. I just love them. Yellow Collareds are really sweet, Severes tend to bond to one person and can bite quite hard, Hahns are sweet and yes they can be nippy after all they are still Macaws! I agree with Tom, my Hahns is my little buddy/bully. He is the best talker in the house and he is just happy to sit on my shoulder for hours and hum to me and preen my hair. Are you a first time bird owner?

Noooo, LOL! From the time I was about 8 or 9, I grew up with a B&G, a Moluccan (who was my best friend), two Red Lored Amazons, and a Cockatiel. That 'tiel, Paco, just passed away last year - he was 26.

Now I'm all grown up (36, eek!) and I have 3 'tiels...CJ is 18 years old, and I've had him since he was 6 months...Sam is about 6 months and sweet and tame as can be...Lily is about 4-5 months and was "dumped" on a local breeder who gave her to me because he knew I would work with her. She is slowly coming around and starting to enjoy being "on" me and getting scritches.

Then there's the Goffin's who is currently the clown of the house, and our resident escape artist.

Oh yeah...and 4 human children, and 3 dogs. And a husband.

Yep, Paco had a good long life. I hope with all my heart that CJ, my 18 year old, has that many more years in him!!

No this isn't my first bird, we currently have a Yellow-Sided Green Cheek and she is great, lot's of fun, and just loves my daughter. I wanted something bigger but we went small to start to see what we were getting into. Now that I know, I think they are great and would love to get something bigger that talks better. Thanks for all your great info.

The little Hahns are amazing talkers. I think you would really enjoy these little birds. They are chock full of personality. Good Luck! Keep us posted.
