Scarlet Macaw
Hi everyone
Just like I've written it in my presentation (New from France), a I've found my 2nd dreams bird, a Scarlet. (If you've ready my 1st post, I've now paid the deposit )I know a lot about them (of course, otherwise I wouldn't have chosen a Scarlet ) But in France they're uncommon as pets, so, I'd like Scarlets owners to talk about their relationship with those red guys.We often read they are nippy, they can bite, be aggressive, moody... BUT according to me they can be wonderful pets. I LOVE their personnality, they're smart, loyal, majestic... and I think we cannot say "Scarlet are moody". Who compared with ? GW ? B&G ? They're just different, and we cannot expect the same things from Scarlets than from B&Gs. I love parrots with temperament, and I know that I'm not the only one. I've read some of your posts and feel exactly the same thing. Please Scarlets lovers, tell me about your guys ![]() Last edited by Julien57230; 07-16-2008 at 07:43 PM. |

Thanks for responding so quickly!
My baby is beautiful, he (I still don't know if I gotta say IT or HE for animals anymore ) belongs to the biggest subspecy, Ara Macao Cyanoptera, the one with a lot of yellow feathers (about 10cm).He's been handraised since the 1st day and lives in the breeder's family. I think it's very important (and maybe even more for Scarlets). We still don't know if he's a HE or a SHE My breeder told me I should make up my mines concerning his name because he already starts repeating .I hope my Severe Mcw and him will love (at least tolerate) eachother. I'll do my best for it. You may have advice ? Birdyland, I'll MP you tomorow for sure |

There is at least one member on here that has a scarlet and a severe... I have pm'd her the link, maybe she'll pop on with some advice.
Due to the size difference, I wouldn't recommend allowing a severe and a scarlet to have much interaction. Those with experience in severes can hopefully speak up. It is not so hard to keep them buddies from afar though, many many many of us have different sized birds that we must keep seperated. AndreaSctlnd THANK YOU! ;-}

I adore my Scarlet! Elliot has been home for almost 2 months now. Nippy, they can bite, be aggressive, moody? Yes, they can be if not handled properly in thier early stages.
I've been told my Scarlet is "different", but I believe he was just handled properly in the very early stages and now that's he home with me, he's becoming even sweeter.. He is my little lover (love bug). I agree with birdyland on her comments about the Scarlets. One of the things I've noticed about Scarlets, including Elliot is their sensitivity which is perhaps why they may be misunderstood and "mishandled" by some. He is calm and gentle, with a fiesty side (which is one of the things I love about him). Maybe because that's how I am. He takes no guff from his "brother" who is twice his size and it absolutely cracks me up. I had not planned on owning a Scarlet because of what I had heard as well, and was concerned I would not be a good parront, but I couldn't see my life without him in it now. We just "clicked". I am very lucky as my Harlequin and Scarlet bonded and seem to be very compatible and I think it's because they are both very strong-willed, but also opposites and seem to be a good balance. As I said where Elliot is calm and gentle with his fiesty side, Newton is very hyper and active, with a gentle flirty side. Weird, I know, but it seems to work. Please feel free to email me about working with your two so that they accept each other as flock mates.

Kim, was it hard introducing them? Did you have any rough patches? Just curious. I havent had much luck with my minis. They are individually very protective over me and my husband when they are with us... no one else is allowed near. We have tried with the Yellow Collared and the Severe on neutral ground. The Yellow Collared was interested but the Severe wanted nothing to do with it. He stayed right by me and kept his wing over my hand and lunged everytime she came close. On the other hand my Hahns and my Blue Crowned Conures new friendship is going pretty good. We have had a couple of bumps but all in all I would say its been pretty positive. Just wondering how it goes with the bigger birds.
