Unhappy 6 wk old B&G with slow crop or stretched crop

We bought a 5 week old B&G Macaw from a breeder and while talking he mentioned his/her crop is full as she just ate. that was at 7 P.M. in the a.m. it seemed her crop still had formula in it. I called the breeder back and asked him how many cc's or ML's did he feed them. He told me he wasn't sure as he went by feel and sight. for the last week we had her we've been feeding her 35 ml as that should be about the quantity a 6 week old B&G should handle. I'm going to try papaya Nectar mixed with her next feeding and see if it helps if not does anyone have any idea's before I take her to the vet? She's pooping a lot but it looks sort of dry even though I've been making her formula watery. She's growing (I've owned B&G's before but its been awhile since I handfed any and never came upon this sort of problem with a crop If anyone can help me with my delemma Please do so. I may even know about it but long forgot and need the proverbial kick in the rump to get jump started Again Thank You. Sincerely, John:

35ml's???? WHAT!??! How many times a day are you feeding her?

I have 2.... 6 week old scarlets, and they are eating roughly 90-100 CC's 3 times a day.
For the last week or so have been offering soft foods and fresh water for them to pick at. Have you been offering her a variety of foods? Is she acting sick?

What kind of schedule did the breeder have her on? Thats important because if she was overstretching her crop to hold X-amount of food to last her for alot of hours, that would explain why her crop is not emptying in a timely manner. I can't believe he didn't know how much he was feeding her !!! I can understand not knowing the EXACT amount, but you have a rough idea of how much so you know they are getting enough. Ask him what schedule and I suspose guess how many syringes full of formula. That blows my mind that he sent that bird home with you and didn't tell you the routine she is used to. /shakes head. GEEZ!!!!!!!

How many times a day are you feeding him? At 6 weeks of age my b&g was on 65-75 cc 3 times a day. If your feeding him 35ml(which to me doesn't sound like enough) at his last feeding and his crop isn't empy in the morning he could have an infection. I would take him to your vet or call them and see what they say. Maybe your breeder has been raising babies for many years and is used to going by touch and sight but he should atleast have an idea of how much he was feeding your b&g. Good luck and contact the vet!

With soar crop you can't keep continuing feeding on top of the soar crop that must me emptied first by someone who knows what they're doing. The baby definately needs to be seen by a good avian vet like papayamama said. That baby also isn't being fed enough either make sure you find out the proper amount you should be feeding it and that the temperature or the formula is right. All this can cause more problems if not done correctly.I hope everything turns out right.
