Travelling out of the country to Brasil with my Macaw

Hello,
Has anyone ever travelled out of the country with their macaw?
I am planning on going to Brasil for 3 weeks in December. I know 3 weeks is a long time for my Lucky to be by himself, at home without me.
Yes I will have someone come by daily to give him food and fresh water, but to me it's just too long.
My questions are;
Has anyone ever travel abroad with their macaw B&G ?
I know I will have to contact my airline and buy a ticket for him as well as get all the paper work from my Vet.
As a safe precaution I will contact the Braziliam embassy to see what else is necessary for me to take him.
It's an 11 hour flight so I guess my vet my give me something to drug my bird with because I can only imagine him going crazy in the belly of the plane.

I'm not sure about going into the country and what they require, but coming back...he will be put in quarantine. ,for I believe 6 months (someone correct me if I'm wrong on the time period, here)

If you think three weeks is long wait until you come back into the states, it will be long and lonely for your macaw.

here is the usda website: USDA - APHIS - Import and Export

I would not take my birds out of the country. I would find a petsitter that I trusted.

I agree, bad idea. I know you think 3 weeks is a long time, and will worry. I agree, find someone you trust and you and lucky will have a better less stressful time.

Thinking of poor lucky in quarantine
Poor lucky would feel

with bird flu viruses and such.. you may be taking a huge risk, and they may not let him back in the country with out the long quarentine..

I agree with everyone else. He will be in quarentine longer then your trip. I would find a friend or family to take him to there house with his cage and toys. I say go to their house because he will get more time with people that way. You of course need to make sure they understand bird rules and bird life. Not someone who stops by for only a few minutes a day. Or see if a friend will live in your house while you or gone.

I am going to have to agree with everyone else about not taking Lucky. 1 reason that stands out is the fact that he is not in perfect feather. You will have a hard time explaining to the (mostly ignorant) boarder patrol that he is healthy get him out of the country. Getting Lucky back in will be next to impossible without an extensive quaratene. Sure three weeks is a long time for Lucky at home without you and in the care of someone else but it's even longer when they confiscate himand you have to fight to get him back. Plus they don't tend to take the same care of your Fid as you would.
Do Luck a favour and your self. Find a sitter or reconsidder your trip.
If you do end up taking Lucky I wish you all the luck in the world and a safe return. You never know, it may be easier than it sounds.

Thank you everyone for your wise comments,
I have decided to leave lucky behind with a cousin.
Not sure yet if he will stay home or take him to her home, but she has a dog and I am not sure how that will go.
Now if I decide to leave him at her house, there is still plenty of time for hime to get used to her dog.
Thanks again everyone!!!
