bran flakes for a treat?

We have some bran flakes without sugar. Would these be alright for a treat for Diego?

What other treats do you folks give to yer macaws?

I would. I use Kix cereal too. I will even admit to having used peanut butter captain crunch for SERIOUS bribes. Yes... there is sugar in it. No... it was not the main part of the daily diet. Most importantly... it worked!

Just be careful if it is Total brand or such. Lots of vitamins in some of those. But I quite assure you a bran flake or three a day is not going to have your macaw keeling over!

One thing I was told to watch in cereals is the zinc. I honestly don't know what it does to their bodies. I give mine a mini wheat once in awhile. I would think in small doses it would be ok, but I'm not an expert.

For treats, I try as much as possible to stick to what they would eat in the wild. Mine love fresh fruits like peaches, apples, grapes, bananas. Veggies they differ on their "tastes", but like broccoli, sweet potatoes, corn, and carrots and both discovered asparagus the other night. For a very special treat, they get a peanut butter cookie. And I try to buy organic as much as I can.

I just went to a local store and they had 3lb bags of peanuts, with the shell on for $3.00 . Unsalted of course. So I bought a couple of bags.
And some dried whole chili peppers...Put them both together. Diego tore into that..... He likes his new treat!!

I read somewhere about the zinc also......

Wanna have fun? Get the mini (one serving) boxes of cereal. Punch a small whole (if needed) in the side and just lay it in the cage! Foraging time!
