Birdie beds

Hello everyone, I was reading some messages on this board and pepole are saying that their Macaws sleep in birdie beds. Is this safe, does it do anything to their legs or feathers. Can they get tangled up inside this devise. I currently own a 2 Year old SI male Eclectus named Guapo and he loves to stand on his cement perch, I guess is due to the rough finish and easy to hold onto while he sleeps on one leg. What are you thoughts. just wondering. Thanks JJones1719

The Breeder is setting a date as September 13th or when the bay is fully weaned. He is huge. i have pictures of him but have no idea how to post them. You see, my breeder sent them not as a jpg but in her messages to me and they automatically appear on the note. I'm not sure how to transfer them onto this site. Need help there as well. Thanks JJones1719

I've actually been contemplating making on using a wooden floor. There will be chains on each corner that connect it to the tops of the cages.

I have my idea in my head, just have to get it out. Already have all the supplies that I'll need, just need the time to put it all together.

I'll post pictures once I get it completed.

I can only tell you from my experience from having smaller birds i.e. canaries and cockatiels, that they liked the birdie tents.

I have not tried one for my macaws due to their size. I have heard mcaws do need a "perch" to stand on because of their feet. I've heard if they're "flat-footed" too long, they may get cramps in their feet. I have nothing to substantiate that, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

In the wild, they do nest in burrows in trees, so they may like the birdie beds.

I'm not talking about a birdie tent nor do I want to imitate a "nest". What I have in mind is more of a large comfy "shelf" that if they want, they can actually lay down on. It will be high up in the roosting zone.

Bad enough I've got a 5 year old scarlet that wants to fertilize my eggs, I'm not gonna give him a nesting spot to boot!

I made a tent for Jezz that has a flat floor but is big enough to sleep flat in I also put a perch in there in case she changges her mind. I have seen her doing both, laying in the back half and standing on the perch in the front part.

I don't know if anyone here is interested, but someone has posted instructions for making a birdy bed for macaws and other large parrots, here:

HOW TO BUILD A MACAW DREAMS BIRD BED! pictures from birds photos on webshots

I haven't made one, so I don't know how well it works. It looks like a good idea, though. Shelf-type, I think.

Well damn, so much for mine being an original thought. Very similar to what I had in mind.
