Marley Is Here!!!!!!
We just got him the breeder brought him about a hour ago and I already have a question. He is making this grinding sound with his beak? Is this normal he is just sitting on his tree grinding away reminds me of a child grinding there teeth? WHat does this mean?
What should I expect the first few days and what can the family and I do to make his first few days as stress free as possible? Oh and fair warning I will probably be asking you all a MILIION questions So I apologize in advance LOL!!!! |

Beak grinding is what they do when they are Content and getting ready for sleep. Its a good thing and after you get used to it,lol, it will make you sleepy! My Calypso sleeps on a perch in our bedroom. And dont think it would be the same anymore trying to go to sleep without hearing him grinding and an occasional soft little"what?" or "hello" he lets out as he is falling asleep, lol.
Anyhow the beak grinding conditions and cleans the beak as well as offers reassurance to other members of the flock that everyone is here in the roost and all is good Kinda like "good night John Boy" LOL (giving away my age here?) oops

THANKS!!!!! So what can I expect from him the first few days? I just put him in his cage for the first time and he seemed to perk up right away before that he was on the LARGE Manzanita tree that I have he has never been on one of those before he just sat on one branch and wouldn't move AT ALL!! As soon as I put him in his cage he started climbing around and acting so much more comfortable should I leave him in his cage for a day or two?? How will I know when he is ready to try the tree?

I must be an old soul ***remembers watching 3 episodes of M*A*S*H on DVD last night before going to bed*** But congrats for an already break grinding baby! Scarlett wasn't a beak grinder for a week or so after we brought her home. We were still new and scary! He must have really picked you guys out of the herd!

in the evening when we have all our fids covered and are sitting there watching tv or whatever cause we arent going to bed yet(the fids all are in the main living area in our tiny house) after about five minutes we get the calm sound of beak grinding in surround sound, actually its soothing for us cause we know the birds are happy and content, Hannah is the loudest beak grinder.
also I have seen something not brought up here that you also need to know about with your B&G, when they are content and relaxing they will do the wing flicks/twitch, when Hannah first did it I was really worried till the next day and somebody in here was talking about the verysame thing, I imagine that it is normal for them to do that, what you will see is they usually will be sitting really still and then all of a sudden they will jerk/flick/twitch one or both of there wings and they will do it many times at least Hannah does other birds may differ. I am learning that sleep is very important to your macaw, it is tempting to keep them out with you late at night and that is what I was doing for a while, Macaws get cranky and one of the main reasons is lack of sleep. Hannah was starting to be a bit cranky, and so now she has a 8:00 pm night night time, and you talk about a major difference the next day after I started that. once again they DO get cranky and you don't want to mess with them when they are that way unless you dont value your fingers, you need to learn to read their body language and recognise the signs of when they are getting cranky, luckily they ARE macaws and to me they are a more forgiving type of bird that I have been around so far so they usually get out of their bad moods, all and all you are going to just love every moment you spend around that beautiful species of bird. My Hannah is everything to me wether she is in THAT mood or whatever, even when she is playing she is a little rough with the beak but thats cause she doesn't know the strength of her beak and she is learning really fast how to control it better, she is still totally worth having her in my life......LMB |

Congratulations on your new bird! I second what everyone has said about the break grinding. Papaya does it when he's sleepy, right before bedtime, and when he's content. I like hearing it because it's reassuring. It's his way of saying ok I'm tired put me in my cage. If I don't put him to bed right away he gets cranky and squacks a little. It will get easier to read your bird once you've gotten to know him/her better.
Let's see some pics!!

THANKS EVERYONE I am glad that that is a sign that Marley is content.
Now another concerning matter...... He hasn't slept since we got him. Last night he didn't sleep for more than a couple hours I am worried he doesn't seem to be cranky but I just want to make sure he gets his rest. Hubby works thirds so when he is home he stays up all night we tried covering him last night but he didn't like that at all. So we moved his cage to another room and my hubby said he could still hear him moving around and NOT sleeping. He is on his tree right now dozing but that is about the extent of his sleeping is just a little cat nap here or there but everytime we move or there is a noise he wakes. I feel sorry for him do you know of any solutions or is this normal for a new baby? |
