Pictures of Foster Macaws
Hello everyone.
I am new here and just thought I would swing by to post a few photos of our foster parrots. We do rescue and work mostly with cockatoos and macaws (though the macaws are my secret favorites!) Here are a few photos of our current fosters. Military Macaw, Popeye: ![]() Greenwing Macaw, Saddie (yup, that's say-dee, just with a double d to make her special): ![]() Greenwing Macaw Rain: ![]() Greenwing Macaw Ronnie: ![]() And this little darling is my B&G macaw, Peggy Sue who is not a foster. She is my baby and has 100% of my heart wrapped up in her little talon. ![]() Thanks for letting me share! -Anna |

Thanks a bunch. They are super special birds. We don't foster for another group. We own our own rescue, though we are just starting to get our info up on the web. We used to be Cooper's Corner Avian Rescue & Rehabilitation though we are thinking of changing the name to Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of New Mexico. :)

I think what you are doing is a great thing. Best of luck with your efforts. I'd come for a visit to meet these beauties in person, but I'm WAAAYYY across the country from you.
![]() One question though, just because I'm curious. I have read on some of the posts about Macaws often being allergic to Cockatoos. How do you deal with this in your home? Or is your rescue in a separate facility? Do you keep the birds in separate areas/rooms?

Gorgeous birds. Spectacular. So how long will you be fostering them? And what's the process for getting them into new homes?

We welcome visitors, though I agree that it would be hard for you to visit from such a long distance.
You brought up a great question about cockatoo dander affecting macaws: problems mostly seen among the blue and gold macaw species due to their larger nares, but scarring of the lung due to breathing air thick with dander can affect all species of parrot as well as their people. In humans this condition is called Bird Keeper's Lung and is often seen in people who work with birds in close quarters with litter air circulation. We have both cockatoos and macaws in common areas some of the time, but we try to keep the macaws in a different room during most or all of their stay here. Bathing parrots regularly and having a high powered, commercial grade, HEPA air purifier is critical if you are going to keep both species together, or multiple and/or powdery parrots together for that matter. We soak all of our birds several times per week and do our best to wipe down all of their areas so that there is not too much powder floating around in the air so that when there are macaws in the same area, we do not have to be overly concerned about damage from breathing stale, powdery air. We also open up windows and doors to flush out stale air and we have multiple commercial grade purifiers (I speak very highly of Austin Air Purifiers, especially their units specifically designed for dander.) As long as all of these precautions are met, I would be very surprised to see problems arise when housing these species together, but it is always better to give them as much room to themselves as possible. Thanks for asking! -Anna |

We hang on to each bird as long as it takes for them to find their special person. Sometimes that's several weeks and sometimes several years with an average being between 4-6 months. Finding a home that is not only responsible and loving but a person that the bird has found a special bond with is so important to finding a forever home. The 3 greenwing macaws above will not be ready to be adopted for quite a few months for several reasons. They need extensive rehabilitation to be good companion animals and the state is currently in a legal battle with their previous owner who was hoarding and neglecting more than 100 animals in her home. We wont be able to place them up for adoption until they are no longer the property of their previous owner. How long will that take...? Who knows. The military macaw above has been here almost 3 months and is still just looking for his special someone.

Well... they sure dont look neglected anymore. I agree with you though, the bird picks the people in these situations. I am happy that you allow the "natural bond" to take place as opposed to letting just anyone adopt or rehome them. Thats the bad thing about pet stores which is why these beautiful animals (in my opinion) end up in rescues. Lack of knowledge. Macaws are definately not for the first time bird owner.

Thanks for the compliment! The walls are my work. I do lots of artwork but parrots are, of course, my favorite and I have decorated all of the birds areas with colorful pictures. I have also done bird related paintings in aviaries and bird rooms around the country and love it!
Here is a wall hanging I just finished with 19 birds on it who belong to various friends on another birdy forum. They came to NM to visit and have a reunion and I gave away the hanging to the lucky winner. ![]() At your request here are a few of our fosters, daisy - B&G and Sydney - greenwing macaw, who just went to their new homes within the past month or so. Sydney was with us for quite some time so we are still really missing her. (Sydney and Daisy are both in the wall hanging as well as my beloved Peggy Sue.) Sydney was badly plucked when we got her, but with a little diet change and some love... ![]() Before: ![]() This is Daisy...she is hopelessly in love with her new mom and her feathers are also growing back! ![]() Enjoy, -Anna |
