Harley's weight

Harley is 9 months old now and in March weighed 850g and now weighs 875g. Avian vet said he looks fine and since he's self-weaned 2 months ago it's to be expected. I bought some Harrison's formula for him which he loves as well as some Harrison's pepper pellets that he loves too and his feathers are looking SO much better now.
When he eats he never fills up his gullet like when I hand fed him. I guess he's full though.

What do you think about his weight?

I think his weight is fine. Each bird is different, and my Cheyenne is a little small at only 804g.
There's a blue and gold macaw that I know who used to be 1000g! This was when he was being abused and fed only peanuts, though... He now has a great home, and is on a diet!

I agree. I think his weight is fine. He's still young. Newt is 3/12 and finally looks "bulked" up

Elliot is 16 mos and is still putting on weight. Sounds like Harley is in good shape.

Hannah was 825 when I got her, now she is stayin above 850 on average, she always mooches, and I dont see her just chow down all the time, but I rarely see her fill her gullet either, I stopped worrying about it I mainly watch her weight and weigh her everyday, also my vet said that some B&Gs are on the smaller side, and that she is perfectly healthy...........LMB

Sounds like your B&G is doing just fine. My B&G is in the low 800g's also but is pretty small and not as thin as she could be.

When baby birds start to get older and stop eating the formula, their crops adjust with their new diet. The crop was previously loose and baggy to allow the baby to store lots of formula in one sitting. Now that your baby is older and eats less but more frequently throughout the day, the crop has shrunk to adjust to the adult diet so you will no longer see it pooch out the way it did when he was on formula. You cannot see the crop on most adult parrots unless they are plucked so no worries to you! It sounds like your baby is doing exactly what he is supposed to, and it's great that he has an owner who is monitoring his weight!

Talking

ya one thing I have done with Hannah is I bought a digital scale from Target, it is pretty consistant but I dont know how accurate it is, I dont think that matters though. I weigh Hannah everyday, it is like a ritual for her, in fact as soon as she realizes she is heading towards the scale she automatically puts her foot up for "step up" its too cute, she stays around a steady 850 grams and after she eats she gains about 25-35 grams. The other night was pasta night and she mooched her self to an impressive 910 grams (she loves noodles)
So maybe get a scale and weigh your bird everyday, somone in here told me that is the best way to have a good idea about how your bird is doing health wize...........LMB
