Not a happy reunion

Well Teal's old mommy finally cam to see him this weekend. This is the first time since she dropped him off 3 months ago. I thought he would be happy to see her! Well that was far from the case. He lunged, bit her, etc. In the 8 years she has had him he has never bitten her to the point of bleeding. Well he got her good 2 times when she was there.

He would only step up tp me or her boyfriend.

What do you guys think was the issue? Do you just think he is really pissed at her?

I was in total shock how he acted!

Sounds pretty normal to me. Ginger ran from her previous owner and turned her back on her. Roarke bit his previous owner. I think it comes down to when they see the other person they may be a fraid they are going to take them back and that is their way of saying nope! Visits are not always a good thing for the birds or the previous owners.

I agree with wildirish, Captains previous owner has mentioned that he may want to come by and pay a visit to me a couple of times. When we first brought him home and up until now I will send e-mails with pics to let them know that the Captain is happy and doing well adjusting. However, I have had to let the previous owner know that I do not think that it is in the best interest for Captain that he comes by and pays a visit. As all of us know birds are very smart and sensitive to things. They could associate "bad" situations or such with the prevous owner. I have never been one to take the chance in making him feel uncomfortable while he is in my/his home.

I have seen good and bad on this too. We gave a good friend one of our rescue macaws and I went down to visit about a year later, he was excited and played with me, stepped up, but simply wanted me to be a taxi cab to Pam LOL! I still go visit once a year when I go to see family and he loves to see me, but is definately Pam's bird now LOL! The difference may be, he came from a good home (long story), then with us then finally to Pam, so has never been abused or neglected or anything, he is spoiled rotten!

I guess it depends on the situation the animal was in before you had them. Captain wasn't in the best situation. I do not want to go into it, but he wasn't being properly cared for, socialized or stimulated. He was a big bird in a big empty cage in the basement... enough said. I know that he is way happier than he was 3 1/2 months ago and he is completely bonded to my husband. In my heart I think the Captain would give his previous owner a real "go" if he were to stop by and pay a visit to him.

I've never dealt with this situation, so I really don't have a clue. I wonder if it has anything to do with originally feeling "abandoned", and not wanting to take the chance of being hurt again? Birds are adaptable, and now Teal has a new family to love. No room in his life for old "hurts", and he's making sure she knows it.
