Blue Throated Macaw is home!

Actually she's been home for a month now. I didn't post sooner because I wanted to focus on everyone's (ours and the fids) adjustment to the new situation. As you all know, bringing a macaw home is a big deal. I can now say that all is well. At first she was on two feedings a day and now she's on one. She's trying solid food but not eating enough and still needs to be hand fed. She also eats whatever fruits I happen to give her.

The first two weeks or so it felt surreal. I was a bit nervous too. Holding her on my arm I still couldn't believe this bird (this huge thing) was mine. Don't know if any of you felt that way when you got your first macaw (you must have) but they're just intimidating I guess. At first she wasn't too keen on being put into her cage and she'd let out a scream. She would also scream whenever we entered the room for the first time or left it. Not so much anymore. She just wanted to be out and with us (on our shoulder or the playgym). She's gotten more used to the cage since and even occupies herself with her toys and with climbing around. We have a play gym for the other birds that we'd put her on and she took to that right away and enjoys herself on it. It's great to see them occupy themselves and have fun when youre not actually playing with them or handling them. She has become more accustomed to the routine and to some objects in and outside our home that she was afraid of at first. She's also beginning to enjoy showers and tries to drink the water.

In general she's very friendly and touchable, comes over to people, and loves to be on your shoulder. She has an approximation of the word "hello" and it's what she says constantly when she seems content. The screaming at the sight of new things that at first scared her has lessened alot. The only time she starts to scream is when it's feeding time. That's about all I can say at this point. Here are some pics, hope you enjoy and feel free to ask any questions if you want. The other two birds in the pics are a Timheh and a Galah.

How absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! I've never seen a blue-throated macaw before. The blue and gold were always my favorite, but I do have to say, I think I may have changed my "dream bird" to a Blue-throated now! Congratulations on your new addition! Luisa

David...I just realized you are located very close to me. Just out of curiosity, where did you get her from? (For Birds Only??) I got my Senegal from there. I just looked on birdbreeders.com just to see the price on these gorgeous birds. $2500!!!??? geez. I also took a look at their origin and whatnot. Interesting that they are alittle smaller than the blue and gold macaws. One site says they aren;t quite as cuddly but not quite as loud. But from what I get out of your post, this doesn't necessarily seem to be the cage with Teil! What size cage do you have her in? Of course, looking at all my questions...you see where this might lead me, although I need at least another year to pass. We recently decided to take in a long-term foster (african grey) from a couple moving to a coop that won;t allow birds for noe (they will be filing an appeal). Sooooo....my 3 room apartment won;t allow for yet ANOTHER...nevermind a MACAW. Ah well....some things have to wait. I suppose wonce we own a home will be whats best! Can't blame me for dreaming tho right?? LOL Good Luck with your Faby, and keep updated....i can always live through you!! haha Luisa

Blue throat macaws are not hybrids at all, but rather a separate species! Much like Greenwings and Scarlets are similar, yet different... Militaries and Buffons are so close looking they are easily mistaken for eachother... but still are separate species!

Blue throats really aren't that common within captivity, although I have seen two! They are starting to make their way into aviculture more and more so now! The bird store I go to says that most adults mistake them for 'baby B&G's'!!! He was surprised I knew what a BTM was! (course at the time I was like 14 or 15 maybe?). There other common (or maybe not so common anymore?) name is the Caninde Macaw.

David, she is gorgeous!!!! Looks like she's fitting in quite well! Congrats on a wonderful new addition!

There numbers are starting to increase in the wild. So sad to say "UP" means there are now about 300 in the wild.
