Pondering a Macaw

I found two local Macaws that are up for adoption. One is a 14 year old B&G, the second is a 6 year old Military macaw. The B&G is up due to the owner moving. The Military was bought as a companion to another bird and you guessed it they don't like each other. I have not visited either bird, as I want to do research first, as this would be our first macaw. I don't want to make a rash decision based on meeting and falling in love with them.

My reason in posting is to ask your opinions on both breeds. Have you had either? I know vocalization can vary, but are either louder then the other one? Either breed more playful? I know all birds are individuals, and can vary. The largest feathered friend we have had was a Umbrella almost twenty years ago.

I have a Miligold, which is a Hybrid mix of both Military and Blue & Gold. He can be very loud when he wants to be... usually only for attention. Militarys tend to be a little more high strung than the Blue and Golds who are a little more laid back. Hopefully "MacawLover" will come along and offer you more insight as she has one of each and would probably be better at answering your questions than I. My suggestion would be for you to go and visit each bird. Watch how each reacts with their current owner. Is the bird easily handled with little to no incident? Is it easily excited and uncomfortable around the "stranger" in the room? Does the bird look like it was well cared for and socialized? Ask lots of questions. Good Luck! Keep us posted.

Phew! Good luck to you! And I see you already have several birds. I don't know if the macaws will be intimidating for the smaller birds or not?
My two macaws keep me very busy.

I would visit them. If you fall head over heals for one and he/she seems to like you too I'd take it as a sign.

Now if you fall for both of them.....

On a serious note, though, I do recommend meeting the birds as well. Sometimes you just "click" with a particular bird and you know it's right. And sometimes they pick you, like our little Goffin that just followed us around the store until we decided to take him home. :)

Well, I have lost touch with both people. They haven't returned any emails on setting up a visit. I'll have to assume they either changed their mind or the birds have been adopted.

I'm sorry that they haven't responded... In my opinion, both militaries and B&Gs are great macaws! Oliver (military) is a little unpredictable, but now that I'm used to it, he's just a doll! Cheyenne is the laziest macaw I've ever seen, but she's a sweetheart. I'd have to say Ollie is louder and more destructive, though. :P
