Beaker is finally home!

Haven't had much time to post because we've been busy, but very excited to announce that Beaker, my baby Hahns Macaw, came home on Saturday!

We got him from a very reputable local breeder, and they were awesome through the whole process. We had visited him several times over the last couple of months so we saw him grow from a little naked guy to the gorgeous bird he is today! He hatched mid-May so he's about 3 months old.

I say "he", but the feathers went to the DNA lab on Monday so I should know by the end of the week if "he" is a "he" or a "she"!

He has settled in nicely and is eating a variety of things. He's getting very good at "step-up" (the breeder worked with him quite a bit so he's used to it) and it a real cuddler. He definitely has a feisty personality, and I'm sure we'll see more and more of that as time goes on.

He spends his evenings out on his play stand and on us, and falls asleep each night cuddled into the neck of me or my husband. He's still very beaky and we're working on learning the difference between acceptable beak pressure and "ouch!".

He climbs all over his cage and has tried out each of his toys. He's been pretty quiet so far but he makes the most adorable little croaking sound when he's content - we keep saying we should have named him Kermit because he sounds like a frog - it's sort of a mini version of the big macaw "grunt". I grew up with a B&G so I'm used to big macaws, but this is my first experience with a mini.

I also think he will be a talker because I swear I've already heard him trying to say some words.

OH yes he is just adorable. I like either name. You my want to wait to give him an official name. Sometimes after a few days a name you never thought of just comes to mind. But then again I am not very creative when it comes to names.

Yep, I'm a huge Muppets fan as well and he was the inspiration for the name Beaker. Well, and the fact he has a beak... :) We've been calling him that since the first time we visited him at the breeder, so I think it is officially Beaker.
