Baby Green Wing Macaw perching

I realize all birds are individuals but at what age should I start to offer my 7 week old "Gator" a perch? I know it is still going to be quite a while but I see no reason on waiting til the last minute to ask. He started eating pellets a little yesterday, very exciting. He is by far the youngest bird we have raised and the next youngest was our Yellow Naped Amazon "Murry" who was 10 weeks old when we got him. He is doing great and started perching about a week after we got him but then again he isn't a macaw. So I was just curious what you experienced people thought. Thanks in advance for any and all help. John

I started offering Papaya a small perchstand when he was about 2 months old. I sat with him on the floor so he wouldn't hurt himself. I think there's pictures of the perch on my blog. It was just the right size for him. I don't think it's ever too early to familiarize him with new situations as long as its safe. Ooh I miss the early baby stages. Every milestone is so exciting!

Yeah I see you got Papaya very young like we got Gator (even younger actually). Most people think we are crazy for taking him so young but we didn't really even hesitate. I guess ignorance is bliss in this case and we didn't see it as a big deal. I think he has bonded to us and the other house mates (you know children w/o feathers) quicker because he was so young. I know opinions vary on that subject but I believe it to be true. I'll get him a perch soon. Thanks for the input. John.

You can get him perches and put them way down low in his cage... like a couple of inches from the bottom. That is if he is in a cage. I dont know you may still have him in the baby box. Just remember as soon as he learns to perch, you can start teaching him and those big baby feet to "step up."
